It's Friday April 22nd and this is Crunch Report.
Hello TechCrunch land you're going to have to settle for me today on Crunch Report. Lucky you!
Speaking of Settle Uber has struck a 100 million dollar settlement in California
and Massachusetts. In suits that contested if its drivers should be considered employees
or independent contractors. In response to the settlement, Uber has pledged to be more
transparent with drivers about their ratings and has agreed to not penalize drivers who
decline trips. while the decision only affects drivers in the two states and doesn’t resolve
pending litigation in others, it’s likely to set a precedent going forward for courts
in other jurisdictions. If I had a nickel for every time Uber was being sued
Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding! We have the first Tech IPO of 2016 and it's Dell Spinoff SecureWorks.
The unicorn-sized security company split from Dell, although the computer manufacturer remains
its majority owner. The company raised $112 million in the offering, after pricing its
IPO at $14 per share. The company was expecting the initial price to be between $15.50-$17.50.
For the First IPO of the year it didn't do too well it actually closed the day at $13.88
a share, 12 cents below it's IPO Price.
I'm a Mac guy but the Windows guys are pretty excited about this. Microsoft today is rolling
out a new build of its PC and mobile OS, which will allow users to try the newly announced
Windows Ink experience for the first time. Windows Ink, offers improved pen support for
Windows 10 PCs, including the ability to create sticky notes, draw on whiteboards and in a
sketchbook, annotate and draw on web pages in Microsoft Edge, Maps and more. It’s also
integrated with Office. TC Reporter Sarah Perez has a nice write up on all the additions
to the latest windows 10 build out. Check it out to get into all the details.
Medium, the online publishing platform led by Twitter co-founder Ev Williams, announced
that it has raised $50 million in Series C funding. Ev wrote in a blog post that the
funding will be used "to bolster our resources now given the demand we’ve seen for the
vision we are building toward." Medium is also adding a couple board members including
rapping afficionado Ben Horowitz of A16Z and Jlabs CEO Judy Estrin. Earlier this month,
the company revealed that hundreds of independent publications, including The Awl and Pacific
Standard, had agreed to go all-in on the Medium platform. So investors must see a bright future
in this company
