Opinion on sustainable packaging - Corrugated of Course
Greg Gibson, International Paper
Corrugated packaging is the natural choice for fruit and vegetable for a couple of reasons.
First, it is really important if you are a grower of tomatoes or oranges that your product
arrives at market without any damage. The beauty of corrugated package, it protects
fruit and vegetable from the point it’s packed all the way through to the point where
it arrives at the market place. The other advantage of corrugated packaging is that
once it gets there, it looks great. You have a brand on it or you have colors that attract
people’s attention to the product. So it wins not only in terms of protection but also
how it makes your fruit or vegetable look.
Nick Higham, Correspondent for BBC News
I think there is a very good case to be made for the need for packaging, self evident.
You can have a very good argument, and this industry has a very good argument, about the
kinds of packaging that we ought to be using particularly for things like food which spoil
easily and are easily damaged.
Greg Gibson, International Paper
Corrugated packaging, first of all, is based on wood fiber and there are a couple of inherent
advantages of that. First of all, it kind of acts as a sponge around your product so
it can absorb shocks during the supply chain. The other thing that corrugated packaging
does is it is very adaptable. So whether you are packaging something that is very large
and heavy or very light and fragile, corrugated packaging can be designed to fit that product
so that it arrives safely without any damage.

So if it’s packed, you can store it and you can have a longer shelf life for the produce.
