We created the Pan Am and Parapan Am mascot.
PACHI is a porcupine with 41 quills because there are 41 participating countries in the Games. (PACHI Pals: Paige Kunihiro, Fiona Hong, Jenny Lee, Michelle Ing)
We wanted to make his colours really vibrant so they stood out. We wanted him to be an ambitious little porcupine.
We did a lot of research, and we had a lot of feedback from a lot of our teachers and friends, so that helped us.
Just the other day he was on a piece of paper as a drawing...
...and now he’s a stuffed animal and a real mascot in real life. It’s just amazing.
When I tell my friends, they freak out.
It was overwhelming at first because we were taken by surprise by a lot.
We went into this place where they were designing the mascot.
They showed us some of the colours, and then they just took us by surprise and told us [we had won].
We’re excited about the Pan Am Games to come, because we’re excited for everyone to come together, and that PACHI the Porcupine will be there.
