How to Fish for Trout. Trout fishing is a popular sport on the shores of rivers and
streams. Improve your catch by keeping the following guidelines in mind. You will need
Oxygen-rich water Low outdoor temperatures A light tread Fishing tackle A long rod and
live bait. Step 1. Fish in water rich in oxygen. Trout prefer to feed in oxygen-rich locations
– in current and riffle areas, cold water springs, and deeper water. In warmer water,
trout will seek fast currents or riffles because the oxygen levels are higher there. In cooler
streams where oxygen levels are higher, they feed in slow-moving pools or current edges.
Step 2. Fish in the early morning and late evening. The lower temperatures during these
hours correspond to increased oxygen levels and greater feeding activity. Step 3. Tread
lightly as you approach a stream, and don't walk in the water. Trout are very sensitive
to the pressure waves generated by footsteps – both in and out of the water. Step 4.
Match your tackle to the stream conditions and size of trout you are seeking. Trout have
good eyesight, and they will avoid a conspicuous fishing line. Step 5. Cast upstream and allow
your bait to move downstream with the current. Trout face into the current, sometimes behind
rocks, as they wait for food to drift by. Trout move around a great deal in lakes. Planted
trout may travel in schools rather than dispersing. Step 6. Use a long rod and live bait. This
reduces line drag and allows your bait to move more rapidly along the bottom of the
stream. Did you know The world's largest trout is found in the remote rivers of Mongolia
and can exceed 5 feet.
