Alright guys, breakout speed is one of those make or break you strategies for the
high school or summer league athlete. Let'*** the board
Alright guys here we go Now we're gonna move into breakout speed
This is one of the most critical things within a race
because it separates the winners from losers and you gotta know
what you're doing with this
You gotta have the know-how to be able to apply it. A lot of times
summer league and high school
level athletes they never hear this stuff so they don't really know that it exists
But you gotta be aware of this
in order to really be successful in your stroke
whatever stroke that you're doing. Okay here we go
We got Dude-- Dude is going to be pink this time.....sorry guys
There he is
Dude is on the block. Okay he's about to start
We'll make him bending over
He's holding on right here. Dude is about to start the race
Now when he starts, there's something that the athlete needs
to understand
When they go into the water. Dude dives
and now he is in the water right here
tight streamline, moving forward
This IS the fastest, if you want to think at this as one hundred percent
this is one hundred percent of the speed that you'll ever have in the pool
This is the fastest you will ever go
Right here when you enter the water off of the dive
This is very important because you've got to hold on to this speed
This speed right here will carry you through the race
Because you have it here on the start, you also have it on the turns as
you're coming off the walls
with a tight streamline. So this speed right here, this 100 percent speed is
extremely important. You don't wanna lose it
Okay now Dude is swimming, moving forward
super fast at one hundred percent
He is doing a dolphin kick Lets say he's going to come up into fly
So Dude is about to break onto the surface
Now here's the critical part. Breakout speed actually refers to
when you break onto the surface, the first stroke
that Dude is gonna do right here, doing fly
His first stroke
has two purposes-- number one
it's to try to hold onto this speed, this one hundred percent speed that's right
here he want to still have that speed
when he breaks onto the surface. Also he wants to make sure that his
stroke is actually going to be taking him forward, this is extremely critical
that you are actually moving forward with your first stroke
Now anybody who's been in competitive swimming has
had that race, had that start where you do your dive
and you're actually ready to break onto the surface...and where are you?
You are still way too deep
You're ready to start swimming but you're down here
You wanna be able to rip forward onto the surface but you can't because
you're too deep
Now that's a mistake, if that happens to you then that's a mistake because your first
stroke that you're going to take
is actually gonna be taking you upward so what have you done to this
one hundred percent speed? You've actually redirected it
upward instead of taking it forward
like you wanna do. So this is very important that the first stroke that you
take has two purposes
number one-- I'll get a different color here
Let's go with yellow-- number one
Your first stroke
needs to hold onto that one hundred percent speed that you have from your start
Very very important that you rip that
onto the surface. Number two
that your first stroke--for breakout speed
actually is taking you forward
NOT UP that is actually very bad
Hold on
Ahhh Red
So we're going to take that first stroke, if it is taking you UP
then that's actually very bad so I've wrote it in red
you see that that's emphasis on UP that's bad. So you want to make sure that
your first stroke
has this one hundred percent speed and is taking you
forward in the water and is not taking you up in the water
Which is very common with summer league
and high school level athletes. They really don't take advantage of
this speed
and they don't know exactly what they're supposed to do when they rip onto
the surface
They don't realize all this speed is there and that their momentum
and speed they want to take forward
So make sure that you're aware of this. Work on this in the water
and it really will help you become more efficient and faster
on the start and off of every single turn. So I hope this helped you out and
Good Luck
