Let’s look at the intro to Green Day’s “Wake Me When September Ends”, really
pretty sound using chords that are, with a little practice, not too bad to play.
My 3rd finger is on the D string at fret 5 …
The G string is open to create a drone note …
Then my 1st finger is on fret 3 of the 2nd string …
Then we’re going to play through those notes …
In order, low to high, down strokes, with your plectrum, going to play them twice …
That’s played 4 times initially as the intro, then a further once as the singing starts,
so effectively you’ll play that part …
That’s once, but you’re going to play that 5 times before you change anything with
the left hand
When we do change the left hand, the 3rd finger note drops down 1 fret to the 4th fret, I’m
going to use my 2nd finger for that as it kind of makes sense with the wya our fingers
naturally line up to the fret board
Play the same note sequence …
The next chord changes to the 2nd fret of the D string and the 3rd fret of the B ..
Lift the 1st finger now so the only fretted note is the 2nd finger, play the same strings
D through to B …
We can play a C bar chord now, for more on bar chords check out Guitar Practice Perfectly
software, we’re going to go through the low 2 notes then come down from the B string
…
Do the same with the C minor chord …
And then revert back to our original figure …
