Peter Aerts - Training Session and Interview - Aug.5.2009
Q: How's your condition?
A: I'm a little bit tired from jetlag. I got in yesterday, but my condition is good.
Q: How are you going to prepare yourself for the upcoming fight?
A: I'll practice over the next few days. Tomorrow will be hard, but today will be easy.
I' ll do a little bit after that, but I won't do much right before the fight.
Q: What do you think of your opponent Nishijima?
A: I don't know much about him. I saw his fight with Mark Hunt on YouTube.
It was a hard fight. He is a tough fighter. He has spirit, but he is a boxer and this is my game.
Q: Watching his fight, did you notice anything you have to be careful of?
A: He's dangerous. He throws left hooks and right straight punches. I'll have to watch my distance.
Q: Nishijima says he will wear boxing shoes. (Meaning that he can't kick. Does that bother you?)
A: He can wear what he wants. I'm okay with that.
As long as he doesn't kick my head.
Q: Have you ever fought with a fighter who wore boxing shoes?
A: No, I haven't.
Q: It's Nishijima's first K-1 fight and you're the three-time World Champion. Is there anything you want to teach him?
A: I just have to be careful during the first round. The longer the fight lasts, the more it will go my way.
Q: What kind of lesson will you teach him?
A: I don't want to teach him any lessons. I respect him as a fighter.
I respect him as a fighter, but I will knock him out anyway. He will learn something about pain.
Q: You know about Nobu Hayashi having leukemia?
A: I heard he is getting better.
Q: Were you able to visit him in the hospital?
A: I wasn't, but the guys were. I was busy with the photo shoot. I told the guys to tell him I said "hello".
I heard he's coming to the fight, so I'm looking forward to seeing him. I'm glad he's getting better.
Q: Do you have any message for him?
A: As long as he thinks positive, he'll get better.
That's true for little things and big things.
He just has to be positive.
If you think negatively you only get worse.
Q: Back to the boxing shoes. What are the merits and demerits?
A: He'll have more grip. Which means more explosive power. He's a boxer. If he tries to kick, I think he'll be making a mistake.
Q: Now that you know he won't kick, is that an advantage?
A: He's a boxer. He's not coming in with a high kick regardless of the shoes.
If he does try kicking I'll low kick him continuously.
Q: Since you know he'll only punch, does that make it easier?
A: A little. But his hands are better than the average K-1 fighter.
Q: Many fans are expecting you to win easily. What do you think about that?
A: A fight is a fight and it can be over with just one punch.
