My name is Tanya Panomvana, and I am an Electrical Power Systems Engineer. In streetlight engineering,
we resolve trouble tickets. Trouble tickets are basically when customers call in and notice
that their streetlight is out in front of their house, theyíll call in and let us know.
A lot of the times it will go straight to the crew because the crew will first determine
if the bulb needs to be changed out or if itís a simple, quick 30 minute fix. If itís
not, it will be sent to streetlight engineering where weíll try to assess the situation as
far as maybe itís the underground feed or if we need to put a new hand-hole or conduits
to re-feed the streetlight because maybe itís old, maybe itís damaged. We have to go out
there and kind of survey the area, take a look around especially if weíre going to
trench. You know, we want to see if thereís a street we need to cross, or if thereís
somebodyís yard thatíd be in the way. It costs money obviously. The more you trench,
the money itís going to cost so we try to limit the cost to City Light to fix the light.
The LED lights, although they are more expensive up front, they last longer. I believe they
last 20 years whereas the old streetlights last about 5 years. So the maintenance in
that is a huge savings, fewer trouble tickets; itís more energy efficient so it uses half
the energy of the old styled streetlights.
