Maybe I could tell you the catechism we taught our boys in the Philippines, the little Ten
Commandments. Because our boys had never been to Egypt and been brought out of the land
of Egypt, we had to change it, but we changed it so it would be relevant. “I am the Lord
your God who baptized you and made you my sons. Don’t have any other God except me,”
first commandment. “Don’t draw any pictures of me, be careful with My name, Sunday is
a rest day, be good to your mommy and daddy, never kill anybody, be especially nice to
girls, (that was a creative), never steal, never tell a lie, and never want what’s
not yours.” In other words that’s the Ten Commandments in kid’s language. But,
I have to say that on the whole it’s been the Church people, the youth groups for our
kids, and the adult Sunday School, when we’ve been in small groups inside the adult Sunday
School---we honestly believe that there’s a body of Christ and that we can’t do it
by ourselves, we need each other. So, the committment to on Sunday we’re in Church,
and we’re in some sort of engagement in education, being really committed to a community
of believers and letting them tell us where they think we’re going off, and how we’re
doing raising our children wrong or right.
