(female 1) Chicken and ketchup.
(Michael) I'm gonna teach you how to make a fun appetizer with cherry tomatoes. Basically,
the idea behind this is that you take something that's nice and healthy, like tomatoes, and
then you add even more stuff. So you get even more, like, food groups in there. So we're
gonna be adding things like mayonnaise and bacon. Gotta increase the protein, right?
Um...so this recipe will be for 24 cherry tomatoes. I just picked up this 12-ounce pack
here. It looks like this probably has about 24 in here. But you know, cooking's not an
exact science. But baking is. So what we're gonna use here is cherry tomatoes, green onions,
1 pound of bacon, and the recipe calls for mayonnaise, but I'm going to use Miracle Whip
instead, 'cause I like the tangy zip of Miracle Whip. And, um...I thought I might doctor it
up a little bit more. Add some of my own ideas, so I got some garlic. I'll just press some
garlic in. And...Worcestershire sauce. You can add pretty much anything. It makes it
taste just a little bit better. And...actually...salt goes well with tomatoes, so I'll add some
salt as well.
So let's get started. I actually recommend starting with the bacon, because that'll take
the longest. So, yeah, let me get this cutting board out of the way, since I'm not gonna
be using it for any meat. I think I'm going by Kosher rules or something. Um...oh, wait,
but I'm making bacon. First, get one paper towel. Put it here. And then, so...a lot of
you might know how to cook bacon in, like, a skillet. I have no idea how to do that properly.
So I cook bacon in the microwave, 'cause I like science. The general rule is that you
microwave it on high, uh...about one minute per slice. Uh...I...you know, typically, when
I make bacon, I...you know, if I'm making, like, a sandwich or something, it'll just
be a few pieces. And one minute per slice seems to work out pretty well. But it doesn't
scale up to this many slices of bacon. You'll end up burning it. So over time, it's, you
know, less than one minute per slice. So usually when I make this recipe-I've done this before-I
end up burning the bacon. So this time, I'm going to cook it all in small batches of,
you know, like, maybe, like, six pieces per batch. Maybe do, like, five minutes, um...in
the microwave for each and see how that goes. So I'm just gonna start with the first batch
here. And I'll just show you how to do one batch, and then you can, you know, loop the
video if you have to. And since you're dealing with uncooked meat, just remember, like, don't
lick your fingers or anything while you're using it. And wash your hands, and wash the
preparation area, wash the microwave buttons, wash pretty much everything after you're finished
handling it. Okay, so I can only fit five, uh...per...pallet here. And I'm gonna take
a paper towel and place it on top. And I'm going to put this in the microwave for 4-1/2
minutes.
Alright, so it's cooking right now. I'm not gonna bother moving the camera. You probably
know what a microwave looks like. It started at 4:30, and it's counting down. And you can
probably be cooking the bacon in parallel with doing these other preparations that I'm
gonna show you. And I'm actually gonna do it all out in sequence, just so I don't get
messed up and... It's just easier for me to prepare it that way. So I'll catch you when
the bacon is finished.
Okay, so now I have my pound of bacon, five slices at a time, 4 minutes and 30 seconds
per batch. And it's, uh...seems to be pretty good here. I just let it sit out on a paper
towel for a little bit to...so it dries, and it's nice and crispy. And then...you take
it and put it in a baggy. And what we're gonna do is crumble it up, so we get bacon bits.
All in a baggy, crumble. Once it's crumbled, you can just set it off to the side for now.
The next thing that we're gonna do is prepare a half a cup of green onions. So these are
what green onions look like. I think they're sometimes called "spring" onions. And, uh...I'm
gonna first wash them and then start slicing. Okay, so we have our onions washed. And when
you slice them, you want to start at the white part, and then go up to about where it, you
know, starts getting green. And then, you can stop there. So the ends aren't really
the good stuff, where it's just all green. So just go through the, you know, the white
part and then all of the kind of transition area until it's, you know, not as firm. And
I'm, of course, gonna cut off these little tips here. And we need half a cup of these,
so that's, uh...up to there.
[music]
Moving on to a second bunch here.
[music]
If you have a machine that can do this for you, by all means, use it. This is kinda boring.
We're almost there.
[music]
Alright, so we have half a cup of green onions. The next thing that we need is a half a cup
of mayo or, in this case, Miracle Whip. And by the way, they stole my logo. I have been
doing this combo "MW" thing as my initials for years. And while I'm sure other companies
may have...or even individuals have done it before me, but I like to think that it's mine.
And it kind of annoys me when I see other people using it.
Take a sample of the Miracle Whip. Ahhh... Alright, and so we're doing half a cup, which
I'm not really sure if that's too exact. I'm really not. Alright, so we have about half
a cup of Miracle Whip. So then, we need to add the bacon and the mayo together. So I
have my bacon here. And we're just gonna mix all these three things together. Alright,
so I'll take the mayo first. Okay, so we have the Miracle Whip in there, then the bacon.
Oh, yeah...look at that. Make a nice ??. Green onion. Get that all mixed in. What is not
to like about this? Onions are good. Miracle Whip is good. Bacon is good. Tomatoes are
good. Everyone else is good.
Let's do some garlic. Take a couple of cloves here. And we're gonna use our garlic roller
thing-a-ma-jiggety. Going over the counter is slippery there. There's one clove. There's
two. Let's do three. Garlic and tomato go together, right? Yeah. Use the garlic press
to press them in. Remember, folks, I'm going off recipe here. And...three. Alright. Lots
of good stuff there. And, of course, some Worcestershire sauce...just for fun. Mix it
all up. Alright, and that part's all set. So we'll just set this off to the side. I'm
not cleaning up as I go along, as I never do. I never clean up. I think I threw a double
negative in there.
The nice thing that we're gonna do is we're gonna take these cherry tomatoes and cut 'em
up. And we're gonna stuff this stuff inside. You can also do this with peapods as well,
but those are much more difficult. So I just got the cherry tomatoes. And these cherry
tomatoes are actually...they're kinda small. So this all probably won't fit, uh...in...in...just
this little bunch here. Of course, remember to wash the tomatoes. And take this itty-bitty
knife and, uh...try to cut holes in the cherry tomatoes here. And I'm not really sure about
the technique on this. Um...I think it might help if you also use a spoon to scoop out
the insides after you cut through. Um...but if you...yeah, so I'm not really sure. And
as you can see, this is a pretty labor-intensive recipe. A lot of little cutty things to do,
especially if you're slow with a knife like me.
[music]
Alright, so we have all the tomatoes cut open here now. Like I said, you could, uh...let
me see here. Yeah, I'm gonna actually take a spoon and do some scooping here, just 'cause
I don't think much of this is going to fit in here the way they are right now. So, uh...what
I'm doing is I take the spoon, put it in, turn it upside-down, and then kind of twist.
But I'm doing it over the sink.
Okay, so I have them all kind of hollowed out. And so, the next thing to do is just
to take your mix and stuff it in the little tomatoes. And the trick here is just, you
know, put it in and try not to get too much on the edges of the tomato. So that when people
eat 'em, they, you know, don't get their hands messy with Miracle Whip and bacon and all
that kind of stuff. Since I'm just doing this for fun, I'm not gonna be too concerned about
being clean. I'm just gonna be a little messy. It's hard to get these guys to stand up. I
think one thing that you can do if you wanna be really fancy about presentation is to take
a cucumber and slice it down the middle in half. And then you can carve out, like, little
holes for the tomatoes to sit in, so they don't wobble.
Alright, so the tape light is blinking on the camera, and I'm not finished. So I'm just
gonna go ahead and taste it right here and see how it is. And then, I'll finish up, even
if the tape runs out. It's good. The garlic is stronger than I expected, so it tastes
a little different than what I'm used to. But it's very good. So I make these recipes.
I really appreciate how much time my mom has put into making this food. Don't tell her
that I know how to make it myself. Alright, finished before the tape ran out. Here's our
lovely platter here. It's, uh...kinda messy, but delicious.
