Hello and welcome this Saturday. For the next two weeks we will answer a question from our student Juli.
Juli asked us how to form the verbs in the future and the past.
So I decided to do two lessons explaining how to change the verbs from the present to the past and the future.
This week we will see how we change the type A verbs and next week how we change the type B verbs.
I have to mention at this point that we will look at regular verbs and not than irregular.
There are many irregular verbs in Greek that do not follow these rules and the only solution is to memorize them.
First of all, it is important to know which verbs are type A and what verbs are type B.
Type A verbs are παίζω, κρύβω, ανοίγω, γράφω etc.
That is, the verbs in which the accent mark is on the stem and not on the ending.
While verbs of type B are are those that the accent mark is on the ending.
For example, αγαπώ, μιλώ, γελώ, ξυπνώ etc.
Let's see now how we convert the verbs of type A into the future and the past.
These verbs have three possible endings in the future. These are -σω, -ξω, -ψω.
Now which of the three endings is the right depends on the letter before the ending in the present.
That is, γράφω from φ or ανοίγω from γ.
When this letter is pronounced using the lips as the verb γράφω then in the future the verb becomes θα γράψω
Let's give some examples, γράφω - θα γράψω, ταξιδεύω - θα ταξιδέψω, κρύβω - θα κρύψω etc
Since you now have the future then just move the accent mark one syllable back and put the ending α for the past.
While, if there is no place for the accent to move back, you put an extra ε at the beginning of the word to put the accent mark there.
For example, θα γράψω - έγραψα, θα κρύψω - έκρυψα, θα ταξιδέψω, ταξίδεψα
When the letter is pronounced using the throat as ανοίγω, προσέχω, ψάχνω then the future is -ξω.
For example, ανοίγω - θα ανοίξω, προσέχω - θα προσέξω, ψάχνω - θα ψάξω.
While the past will become θα ανοίξω - άνοιξα, θα προσέξω - πρόσεξα, θα ψάξω - έψαξα.
Finally, all the other verbs, in which we do not use either the lips or the throad
to pronounce the letter before the ending are converted to -σ.
For example, πληρώνω - θα πληρώσω - πλήρωσα. Ετοιμάζω, θα ετοιμάσω, ετοίμασα.
That's all for today. Νext week we will see type B verbs. Bye and have a nice week.
