If you're looking to upgrade or buy a new tablet, then an iPad will probably be something
you'll want consider. But now that there are two distinct models to choose from, which
should you choose? Well let's compare the two.
The iPad is a fairly large device that you can't just slip into a pocket or purse.
Your decision to take the iPad with you, many times, will be based on the kind of bag you'll
be using. On the other hand, the iPad Mini is that small and inconspicuous that it can
be taken with you quite impulsively. It will actually fit into large pockets or most small
purses or bags.
The iPad is hands down, the benchmark for display resolution due to its amazingly dense
screen and great colour reproduction. We've seen how good magazines look on the iPad,
so let's see how that compares to the same magazine on an iPad Mini.
The first noticeable thing is the text is much smaller on the Mini, so we are having
to double tap to zoom in to comfortably read. On the iPad 4, we don't need to, it retains
the page turning experience of a magazine in truer form.
The iPad 4 reproduces the high def images in a stunning fashion. The iPad Mini does
a fair job, but again the smaller screen means you might want to zoom in for more detail
and images are not as defined as its bigger sibling.
And how about ebooks? Well, here we have an ebook we purchased. When we compare the reading
experience, you could easily make the analogy between the two iPads to the difference between
a hardcover and paperback version of a book. There isn't anything that takes away from
the reading experience on either one, of course the larger screen does show text in sharper
detail but is that going to make a huge difference for text based content?
Next gaming. There is actually no difference in the gaming content between the iPad Mini
and the iPad, its the same iPad game that you've purchased. Within the game, for example,
there aren't extra lighting or water splashes. In fact, from a normal hand held distance
away, except for the larger screen, both iPads respond well and present the games very enjoyably.
How about jumping in and out of apps? Well we did a comparison of that too and as you
can see here there was a negligible difference between them. We tested Apple's Clock and
Calendar apps and Real Racing HD and both devices responded equally well. When it came
swipes and responsiveness on the home screen again there was noticeable difference.
Now here the larger screen on the iPad 4 shows a lot of detail and the
HD iTunes content really does take advantage of the iPad's Retina display. On the iPad
Mini, the smaller screen actually helps the definition and it still looks pretty good.
But it doesn't present the same vibrancy as the iPad 4.
However let's also remember that the iPad mini with its light weight body
lends itself for longer periods of time for when on the go.
And what about browsing? Web browsing on both is very similar because the aspect ratio is
exactly the same. As you can see, there is very little difference in zooming and loading
times, so having the smaller and less powerful iPad Mini certainly doesn't disadvantage
you in this respect.
