legendary folk singer Pete Seeger died at the age of 94 I
he died peacefully in his sleep I he died around 9:30 p.m.
and he is legendary for a number of different reasons obviously because it
is music
but he did send a very strong political message through his music
he was a warrior for civil rights he
with seeing an and preach about how we need to take care of our environment
and he was and icon because a bad he was also supported the Communist Party so
there was a little bit of controversy with that
before we get into all that jiang thoughts art
so I love this guy because for your mother
house Committee on on american activities those guys who were
red-baiting trying to find communists they won't talk to me they want him to
a you know turn everybody who did you say to what gruesome you sonya
okay and I'll also look or so we really get to in a sec but
it its it was a great reminder ok how
liberal folk singers were and country singers were back in the day
it's kind of ironic is that country singers are supposed to be there to
serve as the republicans and
it is like hank williams junior bag with a Johnny Cash was as liberal as gets I
mean
check out you know man and black
so you're amazing wonderful progress on Willie Nelson
and then when you goto folk singers you got pete seeger *** Guthrie
you know this land is my land again also
a charge would be a communist in and these guys are all school when this guy
he got his low folk music what do we do a fair
in nineteen 3519 favorite music but the Lord 1935
okay so I we so is his were in the nineteen forties
I want to live this guys like how he he want to really a passing life so he
actually went to college for sociology
and then he decided ness is *** not really diggin it
so she he started playing the banjo and he started
doing like he was hitchhiking going city to city playing music
and that's how we became well-known and you know after
I the government came down *** him for his support the communists I
they decided you know what we're gonna take a model all broadcasting they
didn't play on the radio
and or anything like that and as a result he he released this really great
quote he said I love my country very dearly and I greatly resent the
implication that some other places that I've song
and some other people that I have known and to my opinions whether they are
religious or philosophical
alright maybe vegetarian make me any less than american
he told that to the committee on un-american Activities
basis so take that okay I'm just as American as years and now
will be on a telecon tax that this time everybody was scared to death
black committee and this guy comes in says you're not going to come over the
top of me OK
you know any more American than I am I love this government
look eateries a warning to the Occupy guys
he said beware you great leaders hope that there are many many small leaders
I think that's not a that subtle a air
at swipe at President Obama I B where you guys all we have a big leader is
gonna save us
know we all gotta work together here's a guy ok great courage
that did what he did for up all the right reasons you have a good college he
dropped out it was hard
me the balls on this guy throwing down a trabajar burden go around the country
I with my banjo I couldn't let him deal edit any comment on that as well the
most important I just
most important job I did was go from college to college to college to college
one after another usually small ones
and I show the kids there's a lot of great music in this country
they never played on the radio and is so there was this great
ironic advantage that he got from being banned
so he was not allowed on TV prover a decade
right and so is that alright well then I'll go to a good
talk to the kids and i play my banjo for the kids no wonder spreading his music
even for
and on his banjo criticism par the reason I love this guy
it wrote this machine surrounds hate
enforce that the surrender in it's just the banjo
I love this guy II love okay
and then finally in his later years here this book
there's not dozens of people now doing what I try to do
not hundreds but literally thousands the idea using
music to try to get the world together is now all over the place
this guy started back in 1935 right
and he's a great role model because he didn't do what you love
and use it for good purpose and to try to get it
you know get peace and although good things in the world
and progress through that music do what you love
and impose all those people to do the right thing just by your example
mean what more could you ask at a life and what more could this country ***
outta Pete Seeger
