It's always fun to look for animal signs. Today I found a deer and a raccoon print.
And there's an old birds nest! At this time of year if you can find ferns curled up, they're
very tender and really delicious. You can live off the wild. If you boiled some of this
it would be really good. But you don't even need water! Mmm! Yum! This is skunk cabbage.
It's from the cabbage family. It has its name for a reason. The flowers at certain times
of the year smell like skunk. You don't have to eat the flower, but the leaves are great
boiled up. There's ways to make water like this drinkable, and today I'm going to show
you one of the ways. One way to purify water is to boil it. When me and my dad are usually
together we like to bring our mini stove and our kettle. I like our kettle because when
we put water in it to purify it, it whistles, because that's when it is at a rolling boil.
A rolling boil is when it's boiled at top heat for a few minutes. That will kill about
ninety nine percent of all bad stuff in water. That's what I'm talking about whistling! This
is my eco-friendly camping cup made from one hundred percent recycled bamboo. Cheers! Now
this is a hundred percent boiled and ready to drink. I'm gonna have a warm cup of water
because it's a really cold day out today. Mm, yum! It's been a while and I've let my
water cool down. I cool it down because when I poor it into my water bottle, if it's hot,
it will melt my water bottle. It's always good to get a bpa free water bottle because
it doesn't have any toxins that can get into your water and go into your body. Whenever
you boil up water you never want to waste it so drink as much as you can and carry along
the rest. I'm out hiking here and I have no water to drink so I'm actually going to drink
water from this river. It looks pretty dirty, but I'll show you how I can still drink it.
We've got some water from this river. It's high and it's dirty. And I'm gonna show you
how we drink it with a LifeStraw. You have to suck it a few times just to get it all
up and through the fibres. Tastes good. When you're done drinking your water, you blow
it out the end. To put it away you cover the top and the bottom with its caps. And that's
how you use a LifeStraw. The LifeStraw, it might just one day for you, be a life saver.
This is lightweight, packable, and you can drink water from anywhere you find a water
source. You need to prime it at home first, because it takes a lot of sucking, because
there's lots of filters in there. But those are filters that will keep you from getting
sick and keep you alive. These are stinging nettles. Don't touch them because they sting,
but if it's a really cold night and you're surviving this would make a really good tea.
They don't sting you on the top, but underneath is where their stingers are. These are their
stingers. I always bring several bottles of water with me whenever I go on little hiking
trips or even long extended ones, but you will always need to find a clean source of
water to make your trip last. See you later my deeries!
