>> I just can't imagine looking at the world or the same way ever again.
>> Definitely being in a different country, getting out of your comfort zone,
you realize how insignificant you can be but at the same time,
how powerful you can be and that's a neat thing.
>> And this has probably been the most life changing
and the holistically enlightening aspect of my Dartmouth education.

>> The Dickey Center is Dartmouth's Center for International Understanding, we work both in
and outside the classroom, on and off campus, providing a range of opportunities for students
and faculty to explore the vital international issues of the day.
The Dickey Center has funded more than a thousand students to work
in 96 countries across the globe.
Students have shadowed doctors in hospitals and clinics, they've volunteered with NGOs,
they've worked with government agencies and even conducted field research.
>> I work for the Baobei Foundation based in Shanghai.
They work with Chinese orphans with birth defects.
Hospitals in China were a bit of a shock,
there's simply not enough facilities to go around.
>> I'm really lucky to be here and I'm really thankful that Dickey helped me do this.
>> Taking on an internship or research fellowship is very different
than a study abroad program where you travel with a group
and it's certainly different than exploring as a tourist.
An independent international experience lets you explore
and experience your host community in an entirely different way.
>> [inaudible] here is a tour excursion and now I'm getting
to see what a real family looks like.
I'm really glad I'm doing it this way but it's definitely different than last time,
very, very different [inaudible].
>> Coming from Dartmouth, I talked about a lot of these --
the things that I'm working kind of more academically and seeing them played
out in the real world, I think that's been the most priceless kind
of experience of my year abroad.
>> We'll coming back to India first was an incredible opportunity and exposed me to a lot
of props, cultural, feminist and gender issues and my work with Voice really has, well, one,
allowed me to put the things I studied in college to practice
and showed me the different ways in which I can bring gender into my work.
These are things I really hope to take into my life beyond India, you know,
into grad school, into a future career.
So I feel like it's really priming me to do what I set out to do when I was in college.
>> [inaudible] has been a perfect fit for me.
I'm very excited to take the tools that I've learned, the perspectives probably more
than anything that I've gained here and use it as motivation
to continue along my academic path.
And then one day in the future, I would love to return here
and help with a more formal experience.
So I think my contributions could be that much more meaningful.
>> We encourage you to stop by the Dickey Center.
Visit with our staff, talk to our students and find out about the many opportunities to engage
with the world and to expand your Dartmouth education.
