And next Pave Mikkonen, an architect who has the architecture office Archeus by the river front. I want to ask something personal -
I've worked for Pave too, for a year, and I'm sure many people in Oulu know him well.
Now Pave told me he ran the half-Marathon today, and actually got third place.
I won't tell in what.
In which age-class you mean - that will remain a secret.
Thank you. First of all I was thinking to show new projects in Oulu. New projects we're working on.
But thanks to AnnKathrin who I had the pleasure to meet last spring with other Oulu architects in Northern
Sweden, I decided to tell about Brand and architecture - how they go together.
And thanks to Tanya for showing the more beautiful scale buildings.
The next one will be very big, and uglier still.
This will be translated later for you, and I'll continue in Finnish.
Archeus was established in 1999 and we've worked all over Finland with our clients blessing and our passion.
We've always worked not only in Oulu, but all over the country.
And at the start of the 2000's colleagues from Helsinki still said:
"Hi Pave, how's it going, how do you manage it up there?"
Then came the rise of Oulu, Nokia and everything else.
And after three-four years, it was:
"Wel, it's easy for you there in Oulu"
And now, in our creative work, we're at the turning point -
Do we still want to be here - the financial possibilities have changed,
also in the past the large upswings, the engineers [as clients], everything seemd possible.
And thereby they've given us creative people every chance to work.
And the project that I will present, instead of showing the old silos in Toppila
is a project that was already fully planned, with permits for Vantaa
at a very central location next to the airport, for the logistics company, Europcar
that rents cars, which we already had as a client.
We started out building a house for the brand - within the limits, that it should cost
no more than the original plans, that unfortunately were lacking in architectural value.
YIT was responsible for the cost-limit and that's where we started.
In the original, for example, only half of the office space had daylight, so we had an uphill climb.
I like to refer to our dear southern capital city region Blobland.
Here in the north, work has up to here been much more straight-forward than it is down south.
Inserting the brand in this building had to take into consideration the fact,
that it has be possible to change, considering the building's long life span, by changing colour, for example,
and not bind the overall design too much. We worked out what these small changes could be,
but still make sure they would be perceivable, in this important, highly visible location.
The new railroad from the airport to the center as well as plenty of new housing, will be built here in the near future.
Despite this the quality of building there is still "wobbly", just above par.
Still the city of Vantaa is working hard to improve this.
Also, the great photos you see here are by the architecture photographer Arno de la Chapelle -
shot both for us, and for the client's own PR uses.
So the brand image is easy to find in the building.
Particularly the green colour.
The building is a steel structure, inclyding steel in the facade - sheet metal is a pliable, useful material.
With careful detailing, small flashings etc., playing with the modules' seams, hiding them, and we get an interesting whole.
And I'm happy to tell, that we've received some attention already -
on our newly released website the project was picked up for the next issue of FORUM magazine.
The oldest Scandinavian architecture publication.
Also, the building will is nominated for the Finnish steel construction prize 2011.
Of course the facade was also tested with the competitor's logo's and colour as well...
Small changes allow for the building to adapt, and keep it viable for a long lifespan.
In all the visual design is simple, and will retain its character despite the change.
The project was successfull, so that we're now working on the large extension.
No longer green, but for the same client.
And there too we'll add some more life to the street scape, a curved facade opposite the aiport hotel.
To me this server as an example of what
projects are important for the office - they all are.
The sauna Tanya showed may have seemed inconsequential in its time in 1996.
However it was for the early Coronaria Group, and has been published in 10+ international publications.
And again, in the photos you can see how a little bit of imagination helped
us turn the strict guidance to our advantage.
These were all new things for the construction company, but particularly their worksite was very sympathetic
to our aims.
So this is the Europcar, the bit of architecture we managed there.
At this point I may still have to reveal, that the representative of the client is from northern Finland, and that cerytainly eased the process.
Some closing off images for this pecha kucha, thank you for your time.
