Certainly for myself being a single dad after we separated and it was, I had the challenges
of now having to look after the children without any support.
Sometimes I find it being a challenge, being a single dad. Like example, she asked me to
cook her a pizza or she wanted to cook a pizza, and I didn't know how to do that, so I just
used Google and found out how to do it. I thought oh that's quite easy.
There are many different types of single dads. You could be separated, you could be bereaved
or you could have limited or shared custody.
If you are the main carer, you may feel overwhelmed by the amount of work that comes with childcare,
such as housework, particularly if these duties were carried out by the mother. If you are
your baby's main carer, you've probably thought a lot about caring for your child, but it's
also the practical stuff.
It can help by getting into a routine, organising daily, weekly appointments and events. Research
beforehand the nursery, just to make sure it's the right choice for you and your child.
Lastly don't forget to register with your local GP and dentist.
Your baby will crave your love and attention. A good idea, particularly with young babies,
is to perhaps use a sling. This will encourage your baby to feel close to you. When feeding,
make eye contact, and remember to talk to him or her. Don't be afraid to talk aloud
to your baby. They will enjoy the deep rumble of your voice.
What I have found that keeps conflict to a minimal, is knowing dates of occasions, events,
parties, just little things like that in advance, so I can plan around them.
If you're separated and share custody with your child's mother, try and keep your child
away from conflict. Remember, your children are very susceptible to their surroundings.
If you're finding it difficult to come to agreement, contact a family organisation that
could help with the legal matters. You both want the best for your child, so don't give
up on trying to reach a shared way of parenting your child.
If you're the main carer, you may have to organise flexible hours at work. If you're
struggling financially, seek help to organise a budget plan. Also it's a good idea to find
out what benefits and credits you're entitled to. Don't try and do everything on your own.
It's always worth seeking help from either a friend, a family member or local services.
Bear in mind, nobody's going to judge you for you trying to make your child's life better.
