Patrick Johnson, Program Host: Hi, I'm talking with Jason Capps, who went to CNM and then
graduated from UNM. And I understand you are now working for UNM. Tell me what you do there.
Jayson Capps, CNM and UNM alum: I'm a senior graphic designer for the Office of Career
Services. Patrick: What does that mean? [Laughs]
Jason: It just means that I handle all the marketing materials for our office, whether
print or web-based. Patrick: Okay. I see. I understand. Now, are
you familiar with NMCareerMatch.com? Jason: Yes, most definitely.
Patrick: And how so? Jason: I get on the site and like to look
around and . . . Patrick: Are you looking for a job?
Jason: Currently, no. But I like to get on and just look around and just stay in tune
with what's going on in the industries. Patrick: So, you say you’re on there quite
a bit. What type of industry do you see that excites you -- that's coming to New Mexico,
or it’s in New Mexico, or you didn't realize was in New Mexico?
Jason: Well, I think that even though it's not really what I do, I think what's exciting
that’s on there is a lot of engineering jobs, a lot of green initiatives -- green
companies that are coming here. There's a lot of solar companies that are on there,
looking for engineers. I just think that’s fascinating, even though it has really nothing
what I do. Patrick: Yeah, it would be kind of neat, I
guess, because otherwise, you have to wait until you read about them or meet someone
at a cocktail party who will tell you about it.
Jason: Sure. Patrick: This way you’re on top of it.
Jason: Yeah. Patrick: Well, how do you feel about NMCareerMatch.com
being a beneficial tool for job seekers? Jason: Well, there's a couple reasons why
I think it's beneficial. For one, it's a super-intuitive site. I mean, it's really easy to get around.
When you're looking for companies, you actually have a contact there. It lists the recruiter
that might have even posted a job or would be the contact for that job. The other thing
I think that is really great about the site is that it has a built-in resume builder.
So that, say, I went online, and I wasn't quite sure how to build a resume, it would
actually help me along with that. Patrick: Oh, that's awesome!
Jason: Yeah. Patrick: Thank you. We'll be back with more
of Jason Capps. Announcer: If you're looking for career opportunities,
click on the “job seeker” button to post your resume and cover letter and browse current
job postings -- NMCareerMatch.com, where New Mexico graduates find opportunity.
Patrick: And we're back with Jason Capps, presently working at University of New Mexico.
Now Jason, I understand you're not originally from New Mexico. Where do you hail from?
Jason: Virginia. Patrick: Virginia?
Jason: Yeah. Patrick: Virginia. Where in Virginia?
Jason: Fairfax. That’s in northern Virginia. Patrick: Like Civil War territory. Revolutionary
War territory. Jason: Actually, yeah, I think everything
in Virginia is probably related or has some battlefield going on there.
Patrick: Then you moved out here, and attended CNM and then UNM?
Jason: Yes. Patrick: Okay. Is that what brought you to
New Mexico or were there other reasons other than coming to school out here?
Jason: Well, no, I'd been out here as a kid. My parents brought me here skiing. And so
I just loved the mountains, being outside, the quality of life. I mean, it seemed like
people are generally happy out here. So... Patrick: So, the quality of life, people,
arts? Jason: Oh, yeah, for sure.
Patrick: Weather, skiing? Jason: And culture. Yeah.
Patrick: Well, if you're like Jason and you want to live and work in New Mexico, get on
NMCareerMatch.com and get connected with great job opportunities here in New Mexico. Jason,
thanks so much for coming in. Jason: Thanks for having me.
Patrick: It was awesome. Jason: Thanks.
