Rollin’ Rebels Wheelchair Basketball
One, two, three, rollin’ thunder!
It’s hard. It’s much different than shooting off your feet obviously, and think there’s
muscles that I haven’t used in a while that will come through and be sore tomorrow. But
it’s a lot of fun and it shows you the commitment these athletes make to compete at a high level.
Obviously, everyone here is able-bodied individuals. The fun part is when you’re playing and
you’re getting to know individuals that are actually in a wheelchair so you kind of
get a feel for what they go through day in and day out, and you know, two days and my
thumbs are callousing, my shoulders ache a little bit. So you really get an appreciation
for you know, how they get around. I guess in turn when you see places that aren’t
as accessible you instantly think about your time in a wheelchair playing basketball and
you kinda feel like, something needs to be done about that. That’s not accessible,
that needs to be.
I think it’s just a way to understand what people go through that aren’t as fortunate
as we are, a chance to give back to the campus, and kind of kick off the whole week of the
tournament. And for athletics to be a part of it, to be asked to be a part of it, shows
that hopefully we’re committed to doing to right things on this campus and it’s
just a great way to do it.
