Russian pilot freed in Darfur. According to Russian diplomats and United Nations peacekeepers,
a Russian helicopter pilot missing since July 26 was found on Thursday, July29 and safely
returned to the UN mission in Darfur, Sudan. The Sudanese government had assisted in picking
up the released pilot, Commander Evgeny Mostovshikov, who had been working for the United Nations
in regional peacekeeping missions. On July 26, he was carrying several leaders of the
Liberation and Justice Movement group as passengers to a peace talk meeting, when he lost radio
contact. The passengers and other crew members were released and reported to be unharmed,
while Commander Mostovshikov was also said to be in satisfactory condition.
We are relieved at the safety of Commander Mostovshikov, his crew and the Liberation
and Justice Movement group leaders as we thank the government of Sudan and all others who
assisted in securing their peaceful freedom. Wishing them many warm reunions with loving
family and friends
