In this video, I'll be demystifying the
term holistic psychotherapy and telling
you what you can expect from a holistic
psychotherapy session with me. Stay with me.
Hey folks, welcome to another episode
of Get Psyched with Ayan, I'm your host
Ayan Mukherjee and in this vlog series i
bring concepts from the world of
psychotherapy and psychology and
present it to you in a way that's fun
practical and easy to understand. So if
you search for a therapist online or on
psychology today, you
might have been overwhelmed by the amount of
jargon and the different types of
therapy that's out there. There's a
ton of choice right now in Ontario and in
North America, when it comes to
psychotherapy and one of the types of
psychotherapy that I practice for
example, is called holistic psychotherapy
and it's also known as
integrated psychotherapy. In this
video I'll be laying down what makes
psychotherapy holistic and what you can
expect in a session with me. So let's go!
First, I'll define what holistic
psychotherapy is and I'll also define
this as my brand of holistic
psychotherapy and in my brand of
holistic psychotherapy I have these
three important pillars. The first
one is - I consider my client to be wise
and whole. Regardless of how "messed up"
my client is, I regard the client to be
whole, complete and to have a deep inner
wisdom. It could be that the client might
be disconnected from this wisdom but
nevertheless this wisdom exists.
One of my tasks as a therapist is
to connect the client's conscious self to
this inner body wisdom. Second pillar is
focusing on the root cause. So I believe
that taking care of symptoms and
managing symptoms is very important and
initially with the client I might show them
how they can take care of their symptoms
and apply band-aids, where necessary, but
very soon I'll be focusing on the true
cause, focusing on the root cause of all
the symptoms and reintegrating the parts
of you that are no longer working for
you the way you want them to work.
The third part is reintegration, rather than
eradication. I believe that if we are
looking at a symptom or if you are looking at
an addiction, that we are more than just
our symptoms and addictions and I would
rather reintegrate the addict part of
you into the rest of your psyche, than
eradicate or repress the Addict part of
you. So always looking for reintegrating
the difficult parts of ourselves, rather
than trying to eradicate something from
a system. Having defined my brand of
holistic psychotherapy, I'll share with
you five things that you can expect from
me in a holistic psychotherapy session.
First, my client focus. I have a strong
focus on working with men, especially in
the age range of 18 to 40 and in that I
have a focus for working with men of
south-asian origin, new immigrants
children of immigrants, people working in
the corporate world, entrepreneurs
and Millennials. When it comes to issues
my focus is on self-esteem and
self-confidence issues, anxiety, work
stress, stress issuing from some form of
trauma, cultural issues, men's issues, life
and career transitions and forms of
existential crises and identity crises.
Second, client-centered. My work is very
very client centered. So your needs are
upheld above anything else and if
we're using a modality or intervention
that's not working for you then I am
totally willing to chuck it and work on
something that actually works for you. If for
some reason I'm not a good fit with you
when it comes to therapy, then I'm
totally willing to refer other
therapists to you, who might be a better fit.
Third, intake and confidentiality.
In our first session I'll be filling up a
bunch of questions with you, called the
intake form and this gives me a snapshot
of your life and also encapsulates your
goals for therapy. This is really
important for us and it also helps to
build trust and rapport between us and
that is really important from a
therapeutic relationship point of view.
i'll also be sharing confidentiality
clauses and privacy clauses with you and
at the end of it you'll be signing a
confidentiality agreement with me.
Fourth, expect to be creatively
challenged. I like to use a lot of
creative modalities, such as hypnosis,
guided imagery, Internal Family Systems, EMDR,
body psychotherapy. I like to go above and
beyond just talk only therapy. I like
to take you out, for a moment, out of your
storytelling and take you into
your body and where the emotions are stored.
to help you connect with your
body intelligence and speed up the
healing process. The last one is
accountability and integrity and those
two things are really important for me.
I promise to you that I will be punctual
and deliver on my promises and always
uphold professional behavior and in case
I make mistakes, because I'm human, I
shall take all the responsibility for
it and make amends. Also going
by the professional code of conduct, if
I'm your therapist then I cannot be your friend
and that establishes the boundary within
which we will be working.
