My name is Megumi and I work as a voice actor
Nice to meet you!
Is this your first pre-release that you've done?
Last time, during the Origin release
was the first time I played a pre-release event
I've become a pro
That's a pretty good pace though right?
Pre-releases are fun huh?
Right now I'm here with Andy
Andy, how're you doing?
I'm doing well, doin' well.
Came off a 2-0 victory in round one; not bad.
I think I've done every pre-release since
Return to Ravnica, on, so yeah.
Which is quite a lot.
Hi, I'm Miranda and I like playing Magic a lot.
How old are you Miranda?
I'm 13
13. Quite impressive.
I'm here with Justin Robb
Grand Prix Champion from Brisbane 2013
How're you doing today?
Pretty good. Good to be in Tokyo.
Is this your first pre-release?
I guess not.
No, this is the third one I've done this weekend
Miyuwa, hello.
I'm here to play the pre-release today!
Since Return to Ravnica
I've only done two pre-releases in English actually.
So,
I've been playing in Japan for
three years or something now
In bilingual
This is my first time playing like this.
Today is your first time!?
Normally in Australia we just do the English ones,
but it's really cool
doing the Japanese and English mixed one here
Well, get all these sweet Japanese cards
that are maybe are worth some more money
Nothing really, it's kind of normal
It's kinda hard playing with people who can only speak English.
The only difference is,
it sometimes is hard to understand the cards,
because they have them in their own language.
It's a lot more challenging
As you would expect
if a Japanese person is my opponent,
I feel a little like, "oh, okay, good"
I've studied Japanese,
so I don't have a problem with the cards
I also study them up and stuff
The people that do understand Japanese
are pretty sociable; so it's really interesting.
If I have a foreign opponent I'm like,
Oh boy, what should I do? There's going to be a language barrier!
You should get on fine if
you just know the cards
There are so many other foreigners here,
that also know the cards too
and everybody helps each other out
and the Japanese people also have a really like,
high competency level to help everybody out
if they don't understand, so
This has been a pretty accommodating store thus far
it's like, they play this card
and you still don't really know what it does
and you've never seen it before
and you gotta try and guess what's going on.
So it's more like a puzzle game or something?
yeah yeah
Oh I see
And then there's like how tough it is just to
play a new format, so..
I saw just before, but
you were kicking your hands and feet around going
waaaaaaa
No I didn't!
Oh really?
I guess I just thought I saw that.
Before they play in the pre-release
they should just overlook the whole set
so they know the cards
so they can say,
"oh okay, I know that card, okay.
No need to call over a judge for
language issues
But yeah, I think it's interesting though
Yeah, I definitely recommend it.
Like if you're in Japan or
travelling around somewhere
go to your pre-release of whatever
Oath of Gatewatch
or whatever it's called
and have a lot of fun playing Magic
It's so good
That's why I've been doing it since Return to Ravnica
This is, this is it
That freshness and wide variety are why I really recommend it!
Hello everyone.
Today I would like to talk about the upcoming Oath of the Gatewatch
Our guest this time is Andy Karwoski
So this time, with a Gatewatch approaching, the new
"Wastes" basic land type
Let's have a look
So, it's a land type called "Wastes" and
it seems like there will be two versions in the boosters.
They tap for colorless mana.
Colorless mana will be used for casting specific spells,
and using activated abilities that go along with this new sets theme.
So your using these as mana right Andy?
Yeah, so basically, these wastes
are a land type, that's colorless mana of course,
well all know that
but these are maybe going to be pretty prioritized picks
if you pick anything like
Kozilek
or any of the other numerous cards that have to have Wastes in them
I mean this is a basic land type,
but your only going to be able to get
one
maybe two in a pack with a foil
So you're going to have to prioritize them pretty big
if you wanna play Kozilek
or Endbringer
These are cards with huge huge upsides
and are massive bombs
but they can't be cast under normal circumstances
So you need to have these Wastes
Especially with this "Endbringer" creature we looked at
A six mana 5/5
that allows you to untap it during each players upkeep.
It also has three activated abilities and looks very strong
The strongest being the last ability,
"draw a card".
You have to tap the creature
and pay two colorless mana,
but this two colorless mana
seems like it'll be rather hard to pull together out of a sealed pool or draft
Let's keeping moving
There's one more new keyword
That will be in Gatewatch
"Surge"
Will be what the mechanic is called
This new card I would like to introduce will be using it
"Crush of TEN-TACKLES"
"Crush of TEN-TACKLES"
"Crush of Tentacles"
There you go
is what we'll be going over.
This card is a six mana sorcery, but
with it's Surge cost, you can cast this for only five mana
But when can you cast it for only five?
Well, if you or a teammate
casts a spell prior to this
This six mana spell can be cast for only five.
After all of that when you resolve this spell
bounce all nonland permanents,
but if the Surge cost was paid
an 8/8 Octopus will enter the battlefield.
An Octopus pops out in addition to everything.
But what I'm trying to get at is
this card
especially this mechanic
seems to be particularly usable in Two-headed Giant.
What do you think Andy?
Yeah, so "Crush of Tentacles",
I mean this brings in a pretty interesting
dynamic into Magic
I mean we already have Two-headed Giant,
but with this set
we'll see however many Surge cards are in it
and see if there might be limited Two-headed Giant tournaments
and stuff like that.
But obviously in EDH this is awesome
So there's only a little bit of time before Oath of the Gatewatch's pre-release huh?
When players are looking at these cards you think,
what kind of decks are they going to build?
That's going to be very fun, huh Andy?
I can't wait
Quick Question time!
This time it's this......!
Despite being a red character,
I'm definitely a black mage,
I love swamp
It's gotta be my favorite one
I'm mean it's basic island Unhinged
My favorite basic land is the
Urza Saga mountains
all four of 'em
they're all so good.
They're gorgeous.
So, yeah, those are mine.
My favorite(s)
the islands from Alpha and Beta。
The reason why is because
they're super simple and easy to look at,
and there's not a lot of stuff going on.
So I think they're very stylish.
