>> In 2007, the Higher Education Funding Councils,
the Research Councils and the Wellcome Trust named UCL as one
of their six beacons for public engagement.
We're now working with a number of public-facing organisations
across London to try and change our culture
so that UCL is much more involved with the people
around it and the local communities.
>> My favourite thing I saw is... >> The snake head.
>> The bat that was smiling.
>> Infant slender loris it's like a little,
tiny hamster sort of thing.
>> The rhino skeleton
>> I think the hippopotamus's skull.
I mean, it was a skull nearly as big as me.
>> Public engagement is very important
to UCL Museums and Collections.
We run a range of events, including summer schools,
evening lectures, and also family events involving objects
from the collections such as the Petrie, the Grant
and the Art Collections.
>> UCL students enjoy giving back to the communities
that they serve and bringing their subjects
to life in those communities. >> Ok so we're going to pump this one up
and let it run across the floor and we'll see how fast it will go.
>> I think it's great that so many people at UCL volunteer
and I think it really demonstrates the willingness
of them to put something back into the community
and I think it's something that UCL are actively encouraging
and getting even bigger and better.
>> The Bartlett School
of Planning run a master's module called the Sustainable
Development Project and we've been collaborating closely
with the London Borough of Camden on this module.
In effect the students are acting as consultants
for the London Borough of Camden and Camden is acting
as the client for the student groups.
We've looked at people's understanding
of urban air pollution and the implications for policy.
We've developed a series of principles
for canalside development from a sustainability perspective.
And finally, we've developed some sound policy basis
for promoting sustainable urban development
through development control.
>> At UCL, we believe in engaging the whole of the London community
in a variety of ways through our research projects,
through the work that our students do in volunteering,
through all of the outreach work of our Bloomsbury Theatre
of the museums, of our collections,
through all of the public lectures and seminars
which we offer to the public.
>> UCL has a passion for education and we seek
to share this passion with our local schoolchildren
and college students.
Since 1999, we've had a partnership for excellence
with City and Islington College and we're now going
to sponsor City Academy,
a comprehensive school due to open in 2011.
UCL will work closely with the school,
we'll offer tailored master classes, seminars,
summer schools, opportunities to work in our labs
and visit our facilities.
>> If you like, our vision is that London engages with UCL
and UCL engages with London.
