>> PRESENTER: As part of the recycled aluminium research project, REALCAR, which aims to increase
the recycled aluminium content in Jaguar Land Rover vehicles to up to seventy five percent,
an interactive display has been created, primarily for school children which shows the importance
of recycling aluminium.
[pause, presenter walks to start of display]
The display is spit into two tiers: on the top tier the process for primary production
is shown, and on the bottom, recycled aluminium. The first step in creating primary aluminium
requires bauxite rock to be mined. [rattling sound of metal balls rolling around
the wheel]
This bauxite rock is then taken and refined into alumina sand.
[grinding sound of metal balls travelling up a plastic tube]
The alumina sand is then taken and is smelted. [sound of air rushing up plastic tubes as
the pump is depressed, demonstrating the smelting process]
Smelting is particularly energy intensive, and is shown by this plasma ball. [no sound]
The smelting process will create an aluminium ingot. Once it is cooled, it can be rolled
into aluminium sheet. [grinding sound of aluminium sheet being fed
through the rollers] The aluminium sheet is then taken to a stamper,
where it can be stamped into automotive body parts to create a car.
[clunk sound as the lever is depressed and noise of the toy car wheels turning]
However, this process is particularly energy intensive, as shown by the red balloon.
If we now look at the process for recycled aluminium, we first need to collect scrap.
[rattling sound as the metal balls are scooped up by the shovel and poured into the toy truck]
The mixed metal scrap needs to be sorted, by taking out the steel [rattling sound as
the metal balls roll around inside the display unit]. The remaining pure aluminium can then
be melted.
The aluminium is melted down into another ingot.

process] Again, once the ingot has cooled, we can
roll it into aluminium sheet, [grinding sound as the aluminium sheet is passed through the
rollers]
take the sheet to an automotive stamper, [clunk sound as the lever is pulled and the noise
of toy car wheels turning] and create another vehicle.
However, this time we have used a lot less energy, shown by the green balloon. In fact,
we have used ninety five percent less energy, which is why it is so important to recycle
all sources of aluminium.
