in accordance with international environmental organizations
Mexico produces every day more than 100 000 tons of domestic waste
equivalent
to about 37 million tons of solid waste by year
Mexico is a country of caves
has nine caves with depths reaching a thousand meters
Huautla system
is the deepest cave in the Americas with one thousand 546 meters down
and is located in the state of Oaxaca
our country
also has the world's longest flooded cave
Sac Actun system in the Yucatan Peninsula
with a length greater than 300 kilometers, besides in the Sierra Madre Oriental
are some of the most recognized and visited cave pits in the world
as the Cave of Swallows
for our work cleaning
established our camp at the Posada de la Paz
with a panoramic view of the mountains of the Sierra Madre del Sur
The Resumidero of Acahuizotla
is a cavity located in the state of Guerrero to the south of the city of
Chilpancingo
near the town of the same name
this cave
is two thousand 576 meters long and 137 meters deep
called resumidero
because in the rainy season the water collected in the Palo Morado Canyon
is lost in the bowels of the Earth through this cave
forming an underground river
that when it rises to the surface
joins the Rio Escondido
part of which is piped and used by the locals
to meet their needs
after a long walk with the equipment
we began our journey down the cave
we came down a seven meters wall falling into a pool of dirty and very cold water
later we made other downs, some up to 30 m deep
in which there were to install ropes
the total path includes areas where it is necessary to crawl
pass waterfalls, jumps to deep pools
and trekking among rocky areas
After half an hour of travel
there is a very narrow area which acts as a trap for all trash
which is transported by water
include PET bottles, pieces of Styrofoam, shoes, aluminum cans, makeup containers
tires, medicine bottles and aerosol cans and oil with traces
thereof
The fauna inhabiting this place
continually have to live with these waste
affecting the environment and life cycle
besides, this is the passage of water consumed in the town of Acahuizotla
then you can imagine
the health implications that this water consumption can cause
We frequently visited Resumidero of Acahuizotla
so we decided to get down to work and do the cleaning. First
we are concerned that the water consumed by the
Acahuizotla population is contaminated by this dump underground
that every day grows more and that eventually will become
a public health problem
The work was performed
in a weekend
on Friday, May 24 we moved to the place
with equipment and material necessary for progression in cave, on Saturday May 25
toured the cave completely to verify their status and do the installation of the ropes to transport waste the next day
also collect some garbage. The tour was done in 7 hours
Sunday May 26
we came down to the dump to collect waste
which as already mentioned
is an hour and a half from the entrance
the task was not easy
because we had to haul garbage through the cave
to the surface and not only we had to carry it on uneven ground
narrow and stony
but through puddles and downs that require rope to extract
. The porterage of bags was complicated
it tooks about 12 hours, and it took all our efforts to carry out
To make this project collaborated 7 people
that really are few for an accion of this magnitude
while some people was doing filming and photographic records, others carried away the trash
and the remaining people were uninstalling ropes
all this activity required a lot of coordination
and good organization
resulting in good shape to complete the objectives set for this brigade
regrettably
by the amount of waste that is in this space
it was not possible to evacuate all material
were removed 13 bags of 200 liters capacity
with a weight of 20 kg each
which gives a total
260 kg of waste
this necessitates that efforts to remove trash from this specific cave
are constant and maintained as permanent project
and look for alternatives that prevent waste keep piling
in this cavity
If this brigade is effective
in the state of Guerrero
We would like to extend this project
some other communities within the Republic
that have similar problems, besides, with this video
we invite people
to be aware of where they throw their waste
and convene other mountaineering groups
and associations that visit this type of natural places
to maintain
clean our Mexico
is everyone's responsibility to preserve the natural wealth of our country
besides respect and affection
mountains, caves, canyons, forests
jungles and deserts
need not anything that we bring
LEAVE NO TRACE!
