>> Patrick Strathman: I received the Thomas Hedrick Sportscasting
Scholarship and I received that back when I was a sophomore,
here at the University of Kansas,
one of the first scholarships I received.
And what a tremendous honor it is to be, you know,
receive an award, named after such a great guy in Tom Hedrick.
He's a broadcasting legend.
>> Kyle Crane: I'm Kyle Crane, I'm majoring in Journalism
at the William Allen White School of Journalism
and Mass Communications and I plan to graduate in May of 2014.
And I was the recipient
of the Tom Hedrick Sportscasting scholarship.
>> Patrick Strathman: Being the youngest of the family of seven,
you know the financial times are certainly difficult.
And I don't know how my dad and my mom were able
to accomplish such a thing.
>> Kyle Crane: This scholarship has been a relief to my family.
It's a blessing, it truly is.
It's helped us, not only for paying for college,
but around the house, my family doesn't have to make
as many sacrifices as they would have without this scholarship.
>> Patrick Strathman: Because it's been so great
to have donors who care about this university
and care for the students too.
I mean, that's one of the big reasons to why I came to KU.
I'm a big family guy, and that's the way KU has always felt
to me, is family.
>> Kyle Crane: Receiving this scholarship has opened many
doors, many opportunities for me.
It has allowed me to focus on my studies and pursue my passions
and not focus as much on minimum wage jobs to get by.
It's allowed me to focus on my studies and get better grades
and learn more and explore other options
within the fraternal community and on campus activities.
>> Patrick Strathman: If I had to choose one thing long-term,
I'm thinking of wanting to be the play-by-play broadcaster
of a Division 1 college.
It would be nice to say KU, I mean, that would be awesome,
but you know, that's also, you know, way out there
on the chain because, you know, it's Kansas,
you know the University of Kansas;
that's a big school to go to.
>> Kyle Crane: I have big aspirations.
I plan to attend law school after I graduate and then I want
to get into prosecution and then I want to eventually come back
and be a reporter and dive deep into the political extravaganza
or whatever you would call it, and find the news
and report the most important issues.
>> Patrick Strathman: And the fact
that we have these great donors who give, you know,
this money to help me through, not only financially,
but also having a Tom Hedrick Sportscasting Scholarship,
you know, that's incredible.
You know, it just feels so good from a student's standpoint,
to have a scholarship named
after such a great legend, go to you.
>> Kyle Crane: If I could speak with Terry and Sandy Shockley,
I would say, "Thank you very much"
for their generous contributions to my education.
It's opened many doors for me, and enabled me to do things
that I would not be able to do otherwise.
>> Patrick Strathman: So I'd just like to say, "Thank you."
It has been absolutely incredible and without them,
I definitely wouldn't be where I'm at.
So, I'd like to say thank you to them.
>> Kyle Crane: From the bottom of my heart,
their generous contributions, their care that they've given
to me, it just shows that they really care about me,
personally, and it's made a huge difference in my life.
