Hi. Welcome to Publishing Dojo's vlog, episode 4. I'm Linda Ruth and I've recently returned
from Distripress: the international conference of magazine wholesalers. This year it was
held in Barcelona and the big topic was: Print is Not Dead. The thinking behind Print is
Not Dead is that the decline of sales of print publications has been tracking the recession
from country to country worldwide instead of tracking the rise in digital. In fact,
in the markets where digital is the strongest, and amongst the people with whom digital is
the strongest, print also remains strong and popular. So there was a lot of optimism on
that front. I personally was a little concerned because when I talked to the wholesalers of
the various countries, I asked what are they doing to tie in what they're doing with print
with digital, and many of them said nothing at all or they might say they might have said
what could we even begin to do. I had a lot of ideas of what we could begin to do to tie
print and digital in. I think retail is a wonderful place for the convergence of print
and online and I would like to see certain steps taken to bring those two together, in
fact I'm going to be talking about that in future vlogs, so stay tuned for that. The
Kindle still is big news since the last vlog I did. It's creating some confusion amongst
publishers because there's several ways of participating in the Kindle Fire platform,
one is through
Amazon's app store.
