안녕하세요, hello everyone and welcome to Let's Speak Korean. I'm your host Lisa
Kelly and welcome to our 114th lesson. Today's focus expression is 처음 갔을 때가 생각이
나?
Do you remember the first time when you went there? Okay, let's first say hello to Stephen.
Hi.
StepheHi. Thank you for joining us everybody. Lisa and I are teaching you more Korean. 안녕하세요,
I'm Stephen Revere. And we've got two more students~
안녕하세요, 네오미입니다. Today I look more younger.
Yes you look...interesting looking hair.
Star wars!
Yeah, I see that okay.
Prabir: 안녕하세요, Prabir 입니다. 만나서 반갑습니다.
Alright. Speaking of which, do you remember the first time you came to Korea? What did
it feel like? What's your first memory?
Right it was very good, but one thing that was very difficult was the 반말 and the
존댓말. And I remember to the little children I was asking like 성함이 무엇입니까?
So...
How about you?
When I first came to Korea, it was a very cold day.
Cold, yes you come from a very hot country, don't you? So a little strange to be in such
cold weather, huh?
Do you remember your first day here in Korea?
Absolutely! 신기했어요. 너무 신기했어요. Everything was so amazing. I just remember
walking around, felt like I was in Star Trek. Like I'm on a new planet, you know, I'm like
wow everything was so, now it's like home. Nothing new anymore.
Let's go find out what we're going to learn in Let's Do It and I'll teach you how to say
that in Korean.
Let's Do It
옛날 사진이네.
여기 처음 갔을 때가 생각나?
Okay the first expression we heard there was 옛날 사진이네. 옛날 is an old one
and 사진 is picture of course, so we're saying oh! this is an old picture! You can
say this about anything.
옛날 옷이네, 옛날 친구네, it's my old clothes or my old friend. 어, 옛날
친구, you're my 옛날 친구.
That's right, we've been friends for awhile. our focus expression. The adjectives in Korean
often come at the end of a sentence, don't they?
But this is one of those adjectives that only come before a noun. You can't put it at the
end of a sentence. There's another one for new, you would say 새, 새 옷, old clothes.
Or 옛날 사진, here you go old picture.
Notice you're talking about some time way in the past, non-specifically.
And keep in mind, if you've ever heard a children's story or watched a cartoon, you'll here 옛날
옛날에. That's the English equivalent to, a long long time ago, blah blah blah blah
blah. That's how the story would start out.
And the pronunciation of this might be a little strange. You see the ㅅ at the bottom there,
you're thinking [예스날에] No, that's not how it's pronounced.
A lot of the times when the 받침 comes against another consonant, then they will be swallowed,
held back a lot of...so what you're doing, you're just pronouncing it as n [옌날에]
And then we have the 이나 there and notice, that's just making an observation. Okay, let's
try one, do anything on the table. 옛날 컵이네...
이거 옛날 컵이네.
How bout you? Old fruit, try old fruit.
이 과일이 옛날 과일이네.
And I love this ending, very well put, I love this ending 이 네. Now Koreans, unlike
those of us who speak English, can put a word in a sentence, a sentence ending actually,
that shows surprise.
So 옛날 과일이네, that's old fruit there, actually that's a little strange you'd be
better off saying 옛날 사진이네. You're surprised that this picture, somebody probably
looks very young in this pictures.
I think in English, you'd probably show the surprise with our intonation, but Koreans
have a little less intonation so they show it with this ending. 옛날 과일이네~
와, 말 잘 하네~ Wow, he speaks well! You make an observation 네~ It's very 자연스러워,
it's very natural speech: 이네~
There's another ending like that, 군. Okay, 옛날 사진이구나, they'll say very often
or sometiimes they'll just shorten it to 군요, or sometimes they'll say, the funny way, the
funniest way to say it is 옛날 사진이군.
And that's kind of a comedic way of saying it, older people say that a lot.
Okay, and then let's go to our main expression today 처음 갔을 때가 생각이 나?
Do you remember the first time that you went there? Or how you came there is how you say
it in Korean. Stephen?
Do you remember? And this is what Lisa told us about before, right? She was asking about
do we remember the first time we came to Korea? This one, you're talking about some place
you went.
So maybe you've been there a few times. Probably, I'm thinking, like Chejudo. 처음 갔을
때가 생각이 나요? Do you remember the first time we went?
Now we learned 을때 before, didn't we? For a time period, this is the past tense of that
format: 갔을 때. Notice that past tense in there, that double ㅅ. 갔어요 is I
went, right? 갔을때 is when I went there.
And interesting thing here, when you say 생각 it means thinking or thought. And hear when
you're saying 생각 or 생각이 나, you're saying do you remember, so the meaning kind
of changes here.
Also, you can use 기억이 나, as well. 기억 is memory, so 기억이 나, do you
remember. Let's try to use this expression first. 처음 갔을 때가 생각이 나?
여기 처음 갔을 때가 생각이 나?
여기 처음 갔을 때가 생각이 나?
Now I told you we're going to learn how to say what we said earlier in the program, okay?
한국에 처음 왔을 때가 생각이 나요? Try that.
한국에 처음 왔을 때가 생각이 나요?
한국에 처음 왔을 때가 생각이 나요?
And one more. Naomi has been with us for a very long time, we've been studying together
for a very long time and I remember her first time here, to us, she seemed very nervous
and anxious to get started. Do you remember your first day?
Not....
Let me jog your memory we've got some filmage here, let's take a look at.
So now you remember, right?
Yes, I remember.
How can you say, I think I said it just a minute ago, how can you say do you remember
the first time you filmed here?
처음 방송 했을 때 기억이 나요?
했을 때가 기억이 나요?
했을 때가 기억이 나요.
And then you can respond by saying 처음 방송 했을 때가 생각이 나요. 기억이나요.
Just change the intonation and say, I do remember it.
Isn't that great. A question to an answer.
And you don't have to change anything!
And now, do you remember wrap it up? Wrap It Up 기억이 나요? Here it iWrap It Up.
Wrap It Up With Lisa and Stephen
옛날 사진이네. (That's an old picture.)
여기 처음 갔을 때가 생각나? (Do you remember the first time we went here?)
아니, 기억이 안나. (No, I don't remember)
여기 처음 갔을 때 바다에 빠진 일 기억 안 나?
Okay, apparently you had a very bad memory of falling into the sea, okay. It's interesting
how they state that. You fall into the sea or what do you call that?
Immerse, 빠지다 means get immersed. So I fell into the water I got immersed in the
water. You could also get 어떤 생각에 빠질 수도 있어요.
Get into deep thought.
Get stuck in a thought, get stuck in it, get immerged in it. Obsessed in it, that kind
of meaning.
And date in Korean is 데이트 so 데이트 처음 했을 때가 기억이 나? Do you
remember your first date? Do you remember your first date?
생각이 나, yes, yes. I walked my first girlfriend home for two years.
Okay, details later on arirangtv.com. Thank you for joining us and please join us again
next time. Bye bye .
