Let's go over the first group of settings when you create or modify a style:
Bibliography, In-Text Citation, and Notes Settings.
First, Bibliography Settings.
Sort References By controls the order in which references will be listed in the bibliography.
You can list them in the order they were cited in a document,
By their Reference ID numbers,
Or by a combination of different fields.
For example, if you select All Authors, Year descending & Title
RefWorks will first alphabetize them by the first author.
If there are multiple references by the same first author
it will then alphabetize them by the second author, and so on.
If there are multiple records that have all authors that are the same, it then sorts them
by year
Listing the newest records first.
And if there are multiple records with the same authors and years, it then alphabetizes
by title.
Here you can specify the title of the reference list.
Checking this box will number the reference list
And you can add preceding or following characters to those numbers.
You can include empty fields in the output
But bear in mind that if you do, you may end up with stray punctuation in your list.
Checking this box will use the conditional formatting rules APA stipulates for electronic
sources
For example, a journal article found online will include the DOI number in the bibliography
If the reference lacks a DOI number it will include the Links and Retrieved Date fields.
And if all of those fields are empty it will include the Database field.
These rules only apply to records in which the Source Type field is set to Electronic
insead of Print.
You can specify Indent settings
And Line Spacing of a reference.
You can also choose how RefWorks should handle consecutive works by the same author(s).
If you want to add preceding or following text, including punctuation, you can enter
that here.
And finally you can specify any text you want to add after the bibliography.
Next let's look at In-Text Citation settings
Here you set preceding or following characters such as parentheses or braces.
Special Citation Handling offers two options:
None or Use APA citation format.
Citation Separator dictates what appears between multiple citations.
You can apply text attributes to the citation here.
If you want citations in a numeric format instead of author-date format
Check the Use Only Reference Numbers in Citations box.
If you do you can also set it to use number ranges and what the number range separator
should be
So that it will list consecutive citations as 1-3 instead of 1,2,3
And you can choose a sort order for multiple consecutive citations.
Finally, let's look at Notes Settings.
Checking this first box includes the reference in the bibiography in addition to the footnotes
or endnotes.
When there are multiple items in a note, it will use this as the separator.
You can specify line spacing for notes here.
The next options control handling of repeated references.
No Special Handling lists the entire reference again.
The other choices will list an abbreviated form of the reference.
These checkboxes set repeated references to include last names only and first author only.
When you cite the same reference twice in a row
RefWorks can either use no special handling and list the whole reference again
Replace repeated data with whatever you type here, such as Ibid.
with any of these text attributes applied.
Or omit the repeated reference entirely.
The last option here applies to the handling of consecutive references from the same source
Such as different page numbers in one book.
