The shopping options that we have in downtown are locally owned, locally operated. These
are people who have their lifeblood into their business and they really care about the customer,
so you're going to get extra-special care when you're shopping in these stores. When
people come in the shop they're looking for good quality merchandise that priced at a
reasonable price, so that's what we aim to provide. These are locally owned businesses.
We don't have a big shopping mall, and so most of the businesses you would go shopping
at are locally owned and locally operated and they have a lot of variety still but it's
just a smaller-scale type store with people who care. You're going to get the type of
service you can't get from a big store. By having a small little boutique, it's a quaint
situation, you have one-on-one. You're not full of a place where there's a lot of people
shopping, you have that privacy. So it gives us an opportunity to really work with people
and we have repeat customers from it. So by doing it, it just kind of gives us an opportunity
to help provide an extra service that a lot of places don't provide. There's more businesses
coming all the time, some nice eateries and restaurants. I just see it's only going to
get better with more shopping options. There's a lot of growth going on in the food industry
in this area right now, being that there's a lot of traffic and people are starting to
recognize that. Marion County is the birthplace of the pepperoni roll. It's funny, when you
live in Marion County you just assume everybody knows what a pepperoni roll is but that is
something that's very unique to our area. People have called and asked if they
were bringing bus tours through if they could stop and buy the pepperoni rolls and try something
that is unique to our area. It's a staple that kids take in their lunch and we kind
of take for granted. But when people are here for the first time they're very excited to
have a pepperoni roll. We also have friendly people that work in the businesses here locally.
Every business that I've been in has been helpful. That's the atmosphere that I see
in a lot of restaurants here in Fairmont. You don't feel like you have to be very proper.
We're not like that. It's just friendly and fun. I feel that you know if anyone comes
in our town they're going to leave with an impression. We have a very good repoire with
our customers. We're on a first-name basis. Most of my customers, we know whether you
like coffee or you don't, whether it's decaf, you drink cream. We know people's food allergies
and what they might like on any given day. So it's just nice to be able to make that
kind of connection with our customers. They're awesome, all of them.
