Hi I am Laura from YoungWritersWorkshops.com, and I am going to talk about what kind of
education a grant writer needs. Depending on the field that you will be writing grants
in, it is really a good idea for you to have some background in the field, not necessarily
consider yourself an expert. For example, if you are writing grants for an affordable
housing organization, familiarize yourself with that content area. Attend meetings of
the organization, read about the kind of work that they have been doing in the community.
As far as formal education, if you have a background where you have done writing in
the past, that is the most important of all. There are really successful grant writers
who do not even, do not hold a degree. It really, as in so many things, it really comes
down to your experience, and your drive and your connection with the subject matter. Now
this may vary across organizations. You may encounter some organizations that are focused
on a certain level of education, such as a master's in a related field, but in general
experience is more important to most organizations. Now, informally there are some really good
courses that you can take, for example, the Foundation Center, which is a national organizations,
offers grant writer trainings. There are also other local non-profit training organizations
that offer grant writer courses that can be really helpful if you want to pursue the field
of grant writing. And in many cases, just doing volunteer work as a grant writer can
be some of the best experience or education that you can get if you are wishing to enter
this field. So, to sum it up, experience and a little bit of knowledge about the field
in which you will be writing grants, and a grant writing course from a non-profit training
organization might be the education that you need to get started as a grant writer.
