Basically, there is definitely a lot going on for the Honor Code, we're making a lot
of headway but there is always things you can do to improve upon and that is kind of
where I come in, I help to try to increase awareness of the fact that one, ethics is
important both inside and outside the class room, and follows you where ever you go, and
really carries over to your future career, and also that we're not just doing this because
you know, it's a prestige thing, we are doing it because it's the right thing to do. On
my floor, last year, some one moved on that was openly gay and had faced a hard time in
his last living environment and he came on to the floor and while most of the guys were
fine with it and didn't really have a strong opinion, some expressed concerns about living
with someone who is openly gay, I heard people talking in the bathroom about "he's going
to look at me in the shower" and you know, my best friend is gay and I have heard all
that stuff before and i know how hurtful it can be so rather than kind of pass fully dealing
with it. I brought the guys who were like that into my room, I instructed them that
this is his floor too, if you have a problem with it you can leave and this is really,
I can't bend on this, this is his floor he will live how he wants to and that's it. When
I was young, my parents always told me that we'd much rather you get a zero than cheat,
and that really stuck with me when I went in, you know you don't really see that much
cheating in the lower levels, but as I progressed and classes got harder, more and more people
started to cheat, and that never really occurred to me to cheat because my parents always,
there the two best people I know, and they always told me you know do your best, and
that's going to be good enough, and so I never wanted to compromise my integrity or the principles
and values my parents passed down to me and even though other people do it, it really
just never occurred to me, and I just think that ethical conduct is just so important
inside and outside the classroom that it should be spread, and I think because Smeal was already
instituting such a program it really gave me an opportunity to help
