You know, typing was a physical thing when it first started.
I remember one of the men in the office he said,
work off your frustrations on the typewriter
because you are banging away at the keys all the time
and you build up the speed and that's quite stimulating
in a way, the speed you can go on the typewriter.
I've not had any experience of that with computers.
I don't think people bother about speed or anything like that.
I used to like the local music;
I mean now it seems to be the same music everywhere.
But I like Greek music, Spanish music, you know.
So I'd buy a record when I came back
and then when I worked in United Nations I used to buy
the annual record - they had one for some charity or other.
They used to sell a record and lots of famous singers would be on it you know.
So I have those records still and I haven't
transferred them onto discs or cassettes or anything
so I keep the gramophone really for that.
I have some old records which haven't been put onto tape or CDs so I can play them
on that record player over there.
I brought it all the way back from Switzerland when I was there so
it has a sentimental value. It is not very beautiful but
it is a Grundig so it is quite good really.
And then I recorded those onto a tape at one time -
some old children's songs - and so then I had the tape
recorder which is better. Yes, it is much more efficient.
You know the technology doesn't interest me. It's just too fast for me now.
I can't keep on going out buying new things all the time.
The younger generation, they go out and buy everything new.
Whereas now with the computers everything is measured
for you, but the manual typewriters you were
more involved and you could adjust it.
On the other hand it has its limitations
but I've got used to it now.
Well, I'd always worked with typewriters because we
didn't have computers when I was young and working in an office.
I remember the manual typewriters that you had to push down each letter;
and then we went on to the electric typewriters
which were very nice because we didn't have to work so
hard with the arms; and I like my electronic
typewriter which I have now.
They have upgraded it and it has a little screen and memory
card and I remember when those first came out.
So I like typewriters.
