Located west of Carrizozo, NM on Highway 380, the BLM’s Valley of Fires Recreation Area
offers visitors an opportunity to experience one of the youngest lava flows in the continental
United States.
About 5,000 years ago, Little Black Peak erupted and created a four to six mile wide lava flow
that is up to 160 feet thick in some areas. Visitors to Valley of Fires have an opportunity
to get “up close and personal” with a part of this lava flow.
The BLM maintains a campground, including RV hookups and a small visitor’s center
at this recreation area. But the highlight of the area is its fully accessible, paved
nature trail. Winding through the lava flow, visitors can follow the interpretive trail
to learn about the unique geological features and the surprising number and variety of plants
and animals that thrive in the rugged landscape of the flow.
BLM’s Valley of Fires Recreation Area awaits your exploration. So get outdoors and explore
your public lands.
