Here at Toshiba Medical we produce some of the most advanced clinical imaging software
that you will find anywhere in the world. It’s used in departments such a cardiology,
oncology, radiology orthopaedics and so on. What’s quite unique about the software is
that it is capable of displaying results in five dimensions. We can look, not just, your
heart and image that in three dimensions but we can actually look at the coronary arteries
themselves, image within the coronary arteries and assess the condition without the need
for invasive surgery - so really very useful software.
Here in Edinburgh we employ a fairly wide range of skillsets. We have approximately
85 people on the site, the bulk of whom are software engineers but we also have a range
of scientists, clinical people and product development and design people and it’s that
mix and availability of skills and knowledge that’s been a pretty crucial factor in terms
of our success to date.
Scotland’s a great place to do business and there are three main reasons for that,
in certainly my opinion. One is the ready access to very high quality talent in terms
of people. Secondly there is a very supportive governmental environment here. And then the
third thing is the ready access to the universities, so, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St.Andrew’s, Aberdeen
and so on, all of whom have excellent schools of medicine.
I guess as something of a returning Scot myself [I spent 25 years working abroad] I have to
say that one of the things that brought me home was, not just the job I was coming to,
but also the environment I was coming to.
It’s not just the location here in Edinburgh but the wider location with the benefit of
the highlands being near-by and yet in contrast to that, cultural events such as the (Edinburgh
International) festival, so it just makes the environment a really pleasant place to
be.
