Hello, everyone! This is Play Korean! And I'm Jin Hee Park.
This video is lesson 1.1 for advanced learners.
Lesson 1.1 is shorter than Lesson 1 but you can learn many interesting expressions.
Today we are going to study Korean using G-dragon’s song Crayon!
The clip you’ll watch now is the music video for Crayon from Bigbang’s YouTube channel. Shall we listen to it together?
There are lots of interesting expressions used in Crayon's lyrics. Today, we’re going to learn Gwiyomi and Jimotmi.
Let’s listen to them in the song first!
Gwiyomi means ‘to be cute’ or ‘a cutie’ (cute person).
It's an expression that has been coined on the internet.
You all know there's even a song called the Gwiyomi song “Cutie song” and the matching Gwiyomi chum “Cutie dance” too, right?
Let’s watch the Gwiyomi chum video “the Cutie dance video clip” that gained huge popularity on Facebook!
This video really is so cute.
One plus one is a cutie.
Two plus two is a cutie.
Three plus three is a cutie, cu cu cutie, cu cu cutie.
Four plus four is a cutie.
Five plus five is a cutie.
Six plus six is a cutie, I’m a cutie.
You can find various different video clips if you search for Gwiyomi song "cutie song" on YouTube.
Prepare yourselves though; some videos can be too cute.
The next expression that we’ll learn today, Jimotmi, is also an expression that was coined on the internet.
It’s the shortened expression of JIkyeojuji MOTeaseo MIanhae “Sorry I couldn’t protect you”.
You use this expression to express your sympathy towards your favorite celebrity
when they find themselves in an embarrassing situation.
Let's take a look at a photo from Segye.com first and then I'll explain more.
In this photo you can see Yuna Kim, the much loved figure skater in Korea.
Do you know why this picture made many Koreans feel sorry for her?
It was because Yuna Kim looked relatively ugly standing beside Korea's most beautiful actresses.
Koreans use this expression Jimotmi often, not only to talk about celebrities but also about friends, family
and non-human objects.
For example, if I were to perform the gwiyomi chum “the cutie dance” in this lesson,
One plus one is a cutie.
my friends and family would say ‘Jin Hee Park, Jimotmi’ “Sorry I couldn’t protect you, Jin Hee”.
And the people who love the gwiyomi chum “the cutie damce” being performed by pretty girls would say
‘gwiyomi chum Jimotmi’ “Sorry that I couldn’t protect you, the cutie dance”.
So in today's lesson we’ve learnt about Gwiyomi and Jimotmi.
Gwiyomi means ‘to be cute’ or ‘a cutie’
And Jimotmi is the shortened expression of JIkyeojuji MOTeaseo MIanhae “Sorry I couldn’t protect you”.
Now, I would like to wrap up the lesson listening to the expressions we've learnt today in the Crayon music video.
