Despite a strong start to the year, South Korea's shipbuilding industry has lost its
top spot in the global ranking,... falling behind China.
According to UK-based industry tracker Clarkson Research, Korean shipbuilders' orders amounted
to two-point-eight-three million compensated gross tons in the first half of 2017.
That's still double the orders sealed during the same period last year.
However with last month's deal to build four LNG carriers, China hit two-point-nine million
CGT, just enough to knock South Korea off the top spot.
Hyundai Heavy Industries and other Korean shipyards have clinched record orders due
to increased demand for large oil tankers and liquefied natural gas carriers, and are
expected to secure more orders later this year.
