Some of the social habits people have, they think other countries allow
you to drink during pregnancy why can't we? Unfortunitly there is not a
level where patients can drink alcohol and not be worried about Fetal
Alcohol Syndrome, which is something that can be devestating to the
child. They have developmental delays, they have cognitive problems-and
unfortunitly there is no amount that we can tell patients that if you
have a glass of wine with dinner that's fine because they've seen
children in other countries with that moderation still have a problem.
As far as smoking, that's probably the biggest social habbit that
patients don't give up. Those babies have lower birth rates, their lung
development is there but they're prone to asthema and are just a lot of
times sick, puny, kids. Especially if they have that in-utero and then
go home to that environment inside the household. So we do definitely
recommend if not necessarily mom but other family members continue to
smoke that they do it outside the house. Get that house aired out so
that the baby has fresh air to grow and develop with. SIDS is also there
and there is some corelition they feel between smoking and SIDS. There
has been a recent, and when I say recent study I mean within the last 5
or 10 years, where they have now recommend the baby be put on their
backs to sleep. And not propping bottles, and just doing things so their
position that the airway remains open. There's no risk factors other
than that, that we know is effecting SIDS. It doesn't seem to run in
families. It's just one of those devestating disorders that all you can
do is all you can do. Keep that baby on it's back, don't prop the
bottles and keep that monitor. Unfortunitly even with the monitor you
can't hear them chocking, they just stop breathing.
