My job is my life.
These are the hardest working kids I have ever been around.
I do not treat these kids like children, I treat them as young adults.
I'm Joey Ashbrook, the band director at Central High School in San Angelo ISD.
When I got here five years ago, the band had around 180 students, and now we have 418 enrolled.
This past year we took the band to the state marching contest for the first time in 33 years,
and we are so very proud of their work.
We get to the first football game, we come out and we turn around and hit the first note
and the entire stadium erupts in applause.
We finish the show and it's a standing ovation for five minutes.
The kids are walking off the field all in tears.
And they were like, "That was great!
No one has ever stood up for us before."
If someone doesn't have enough food to eat, if they don't have a place to stay, if they
don't have clothes we come together as a family and we take care of them.
I love my students.
They're my kids.
At San Angelo ISD, our people make the difference.
