The National Pan-Hellenic Council is comprised of nine organizations.
There are five fraternities and four sororities.
Here at the University of Pittsburgh we have
three fraternities and three sororities.
Panhellenic Association is comprised of the
eleven social sororities and two multicultural
sororities here at Pitt. We come together
as a governing body to aid each other
anyway we can and sometimes work out
projects to do together as well.
The IFC or Interfraternity Council is pretty
much just the governing board of all
fraternities on campus. We help them
in any way they need.
Each of the organizations have different requirements
and a lot of them vary between GPA
and most times GPA is a 2.5.
Other times it may be the number of
credits that you have so it's just best
for you to ask the members of the chapter
and get what the requirements are for joining.
You go to rush events after you go to meet the Greeks
and you kind of get to feel out
which organizations you like
which organizations you don't like.
You have a chance to meet all eleven sororities
and talk to women in the different chapters
to see what they're like and
then it culminates on Bid Day where you
finally receive a bid to one sorority.
The major benefits of joining a
fraternity or sorority is that you
get to be a lifetime member.
So instead of only getting to live
out the fun of being in Greek life
for four years, you get to do this
for the rest of your life.
You get to be part of great events such as
fundraising events like PDM,
Pitt Make a Difference day. You just
get to help out your organization.
You get to help out the campus in general
and it's really about what you put in
and what you get out so
it is very individualized in that sense.
You're able to receive academic support,
give back to the Pitt Campus and
the Pittsburgh community through
community service events. There are
a lot of networking possibilities with
people in other sororities and fraternities
and there's a lot to gain from joining a sorority.
You get to join an organization full of
people like you who are interested in
the same things you are.
You get to be a part of giving back
to the campus and great events
and pretty much just be a part
of something bigger than yourself.
