bjbj =/qj The most famous piece of ancient Roman glass is a cameo glass vessel known
as the Portland Vase. The Portland Vase was taken to England from Italy in 1783, and it
caused a sensation. The master potter, Josiah Wedgwood eventually produced replicas of the
Portland Vase made of ceramic. And through the 1800s glassmakers attempted to make glass
replicas of this ancient masterpiece. The first replica ever made was made be a man
named John Northwood. He began it in 1873 and didn t complete it for three full years.
This replica is on the far left of the lower shelf in this case. Two years after Northwood
completed his vase, Joseph Locke, also working in England, produced a replica and you see
that in the center of the case. On the right is a version of the Portland Vase made in
Bohemia in the early 1860s. And if you go to our Jerome and Lucille Strauss Study Gallery
you will see one of Josiah Wedgwood s original ceramic Portland replicas. urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags
