Hi. Summer’s upon us and summer can be a time of real
real fun and relaxation. And I also think it’s so important
that our children around the country continue to learn
during the summer. And I worry a lot about what’s called
summer reading loss: children will get to a certain point
in their academic ability by June and when they come
back to school in the fall—in September they’re further behind
than when they left, and that can’t happen.
So I really want to appeal to all parents to use the
summer months to really spend time with your children.
Turn those TVs off every night, spend time reading with
them, visit museums, visit parks, visit libraries—every
child should have a library card. Find ways to continue to
learn and to learn as a family all summer.
If we do that as a nation our children will hit school this
fall ready to learn, ready to go to the next level and we’ll
have a great, great school year together.
Thank you so much.
