My name’s Tony Singh and I live in the borough of Poplar for about 8 years. Before that I’ve
grown up for eighteen years in Hackney and I’m a Water Sports Instructor. It’s a
very nice area. It’s good to see all the redevelopments of building, more Youth Clubs
setting up and more Adventure Playgrounds for kids and teenagers. I started this centre
about three years ago as an Instructor but I’ve taken part in sports since thirteen
or fourteen through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and basically just carried on all my
sports through that. I found out that I’m pretty good at kayaking and canoeing and got
qualified through there through different outdoor centres. I enjoy all the water sports
as a Kayaking and Canoeing Instructor and a Dragon Boater. It’s just good to see a
whole range of ages from about nine to sixty- odd years old people getting involved in sports
and everything. The changes I’ve seen are the redevelopments of buildings. So you’ve
got new places coming up and its becoming more open for everyone in the community to
use. For example Youth Clubs and cafes and skateboarding parks and stuff like that. Hopefully
after the Olympics it’ll be open to everyone in London and England to take part in- hopefully
without finances or prices being such an issue with more youth clubs people and students
taking part in sports because it’s there. At the moment I’m not particularly planning
to go to the Olympics but if it comes up it comes up. And if I was going to see any of
the sporting events it would probably be the Kayaking side and everything. Not only to
see all the kayakers and the standard, but also what’s going to be there after the
Olympics and what use there is for other people who are interested in Water Sports. I don’t
particularly have any role models or inspirational people that I look up to but what I do think
is that everyone’s got something to give. So every person you can learn something new
from them. So yeah no particularly big role models or inspirational people that I look
up to. But like I said you learn something new from each person and that what makes me
me! Hopes and aspirations? Hopefully they’ll be more people taking part in, not just water
sports but all different types of sports and just for the communities to get closer and
become more tight-knit communities where a lot of people know each other instead of becoming
individuals.
