Nelson Mandela has been released from a hospital near the South African capital after reportedly
undergoing a “routine checkup.”
“Mr. Mandela, who is 94 years old has been a cause for concern over health worries for
the last several years.” (Via BBC)
The former South African president spent three weeks in the hospital last December getting
treated for gallstones and a lung infection. (Via ABC)
Mandela is considered one of the world’s most prominent figures and is known as the
“Father of the Nation” in South Africa for his anti-apartheid activism and his fight
against racism and poverty in the country. (Via Al Jazeera)
He was the first South African president to be elected in a representative election in
1994 after spending 27 years in prison for protesting against oppression in the government.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner was receiving a scheduled medical check-up for a pre-existing

Mandela has been receiving medical treatment out of his home since his December hospitalization.
He has returned to his home in Johannesburg.
