Another Roman Catholic leader is stepping down from his post. This time, amid allegations
of “inappropriate behavior.”
Cardinal Keith O’Brien is Britain’s most senior cleric. His resignation is effective
immediately. And it comes on the heels of an article in yesterday’s Observer which
alleged the 74-year-old cardinal acted “inappropriately” in his relations with three priests and one
former priest. The BBC and the Wall Street Journal look into some of those allegations.
“His accusers describe how, as younger priests, it was difficult to challenge him. He has
immense power over you. He can move you, freeze you out, bring you into the fold... he controls
every aspect of your life.”
“The allegations as published aren’t very specific but they seem to give into some sort
of controversial activity of approaching young priests after their night prayers and what
have you.”
The New York Times reports O’Brien has been planning for some time to resign on his 75th
birthday in March. But just one day after the allegations were brought to light, his
last day on the job has been bumped up to.. today.
The cardinal said in a statement: “Looking back over my years of ministry: For any good
I have been able to do, I thank God. For any failures, I apologise to all whom I have offended.”
The pope will appoint an apostolic administrator to govern the British archdiocese until a
permanent replacement is chosen. O’Brien will not take part in the upcoming papal election,
leaving Britain unrepresented.
