Hi Everyone, my name is Sarah Bear-Eberhardt. I'm going to take a quick minute to just show
you how to use one of the new features of Carmen 10. What I am going to show you is
how to use the "New Document" area of Carmen. So go ahead and log into Carmen and select
the course where you want to make the change. Click on Content. And select the Module where
you want to add something in. If you've done a course copy, you will already see content
in your course and in the module, but you can still add things in. So we are going to
do this by clicking on the "New" button, where a menu will appear below. [Click on "New Document.]
We are going to look at New Document in this video. What you will see is what's called
an html editor. This is a very nice feature of Carmen because you can add content into
Carmen with this, without having to enter it into a Word document, and then copying
and pasting and wondering if the formatting is going to hold.
You want to make sure that you give it a title so that the students are going to know what
it is. They want to know what the files are before they click on them and open them up.
So let's give this a name. Okay, here you can see that I have entered a title for what
my students will see and what they will click on when they want to go into this document.
Now we are click down in the big box where we will see a lot of the features of a Word
document. This should be somewhat familiar to you. You can see that we have cut, copy,
paste, and a couple of different paste options. The paragraph allows you to choose headings
that are preformatted, and easy to use. Or you can tell this html format what kind of
font, and what size of font, and the color of font that you want to choose. You can also
bold, italicize, and underline. There is a drop-down arrow here where you can use a couple
of different things. You have indent, decreasing the indent, a bulleted list, and if you click
on this down arrow, you get a numbered list, and alignment options.
Here you have an "Insert Stuff" button. If you click on that, you will see the various
options that you have. You can upload something from your computer. If you have uploaded something
into the course itself, in Carmen, you can click on that, and it will give you the options
of the things you have in your Carmen course. We are not currently using anything from the
Learning Repository, so I am going to skip over that. You can insert a link, where you
can copy and paste a link from the web into here, or if you have an embed code from a
video, you can click on embed code, a copy and paste the embed code into there. Once
you have selected what you want to insert, you can click "Next," and follow the prompts
from there to insert it into this particular document.
You also have an option to insert a picture, or a quick link, and a quick link can take
you to a place within your course very quickly. The down arrow also gives you a few other
options, and finally, you can create a table, and you have some options for your table as
well.
So I am going to pause the video for a second and add some content in. Okay, as you can
see, I've added in some content into the content area. And I've demonstrated for you some of
the basic functions of this html editor.
So you may ask, "Why would I want to use this document creator within Carmen instead of
using a Word document. The answer is because oftentimes, when you create s Word document,
and you want to copy and paste it into Carmen, you are going to lose your formatting . Now
that doesn't mean that you can't go back through and reformat, but to save yourself some time,
you may very well just want to create it within Carmen and format it as you wish within Carmen.
It will not lose its formatting once you've done that. You do have the option of spell-checking
your work before you are done.
If you click Save as Draft, only you will be able to see this. Your students will not,
so if you want to make sure that your students can see it, click Publish. If you want to
just save it as a draft so you can come back to it later and add to it or revise it later,
you can click Save as Draft. We are going to go ahead and click publish.
And we can see how it was entered, and how it will appear to the students. We are going
to go back out to the larger module, so we can see it listed. If we scroll down a little
bit, there is our newest document. And if we click on it, it will take us in, and we
can see it directly on the screen. As you can see, our content has appeared here.
If you have decided to delete it, it is easy to do. You simply go to back into the module
here it is located. Click the down arrow next to the title, and click delete topic. It'll
ask you if you want to delete from the page only, or from the entire course. The choice
is yours. Make your selection, and click Delete. It will then be removed.
If you have any questions about how to use this New Document feature, please do not hesitate
to contact me or Joni Tornwall. We will be happy to help. Thank you.
