Indonesian villagers flee another volcanic eruption. For the second time in one week
following a long period of dormancy, the Sinabung volcano on Sumatra Island erupted on Friday,
September 3, sending a powerful column of hot ash over three kilometers into the air
with a force that could be felt eight kilometers away. Panicking residents, many of whom had
been able to return home after the first eruption, found themselves running again for safety
as officials evacuated all villagers within a six-kilometer radius. The Red Cross is providing
shelter for many of the evacuees, while the Ministry of Health has distributed face masks
and food, with nearly 500 soldiers and 400 police personnel who were sent to help with
earlier aid distribution efforts.
Supreme Master Ching Hai asked our Association members to please check with local governments
and other agencies to find out if extra help is needed and, if possible, go to see if the
victims need urgent aid. She also added that financial assistance is available as necessary.
Indonesian Ministry of Health, the Red Cross, and all personnel working to ensure the safety
of those near the volcano, we appreciate your timely efforts, as well as Supreme Master
Ching Hai's caring concern. Our prayers for the quick re-stabilization of the Indonesian
people’s lives and that our striving for greater consideration helps ease such dangers
as these
