Hi, this is John Kohler with growingyourgreens.com. I have another exciting episode for you today.
Today I was just about to spread some compost tea on my baby plants. I've got some sunchokes
here you can't see because they're still about 6 inches tall and then I've got some peppers
there. Whenever I transplant, and actually during the season, I like to put on the compost
tea which is a really good way to enrich the fertiliser and actually the microbial growth
in the soil, because it's the microbes that help break down the nutrients in the compost
to help the plants absorb them. We're not talking about boogie brew compost here, nothing
about that today, but what we are going to talk about is something, in my opinion, that
is more important. Many of you guys know that I make these videos on YouTube to share my
passion about gardening and to make the world a better place one person at a time. I really
want to encourage everyone out there to share your passion, whether it's gardening or anything
else. Share your passion with others because you can't it with you. Information is free.
I really like the Linux operating system because it is open source software and it's making
trade secrets available to everybody. I think gardening especially should be able to get
out there to more people. Now up until this point I have been primarily making videos.
My goal is to make a video every other day, which is half of 365, which is like 170 videos
a year, which is a lot of time, effort and work it takes me to do this, but I really
know and am confident that this is actually making a difference in people's lives and
I have seen you guy's feedback and I appreciate you guys for watching and for actually starting
to garden, because that's what my channel is all about -- getting people growing food,
growing real food and getting back to the food as naturally found in nature, not out
of packages, bottles and jars. Our system has been so screwed up. In addition, food
is literally power. When you're controlling the food you eat and when you're independently
growing your own food, it's going to be a lot healthier for yourself, for the planet
and for the world at large. So in the past I have encouraged you guys to make videos
about your gardening experiences to share your gardening experiences with others, but
now I'm going to take it to the next step, and I'm also going to encourage you guys to
take the next step as well. My current thinking is that I do reach a lot of people through
my videos, but I don't get a lot of one on one time with people out there in YouTube
land, so I want to select a handful of people to help me and work with me personally in
my gardens. Basically you would be like and intern, or like the apprentice, but I won't
fire you probably! I want to work with people hand in hand and show them the tasks I'm doing
and also to get some help around my gardens. I have two garden projects right now, one
located in Las Vegas, Nevada and one located in Sonoma County, California so if you're
in either of those places and you want to dedicate a couple of hours maybe 2 or 3 times
a week to me, to learn about my plants and to help me out with dividing sunchokes, or
saving seeds, or maybe just weeding and doing some other stuff around here I definitely
could use your help. On the same token, I want to encourage you guys, especially if
you have been gardening for a long time, to help others and to teach them the trade, just
like in the old days when they had the apprentice learning the trade. Just by watching my videos,
you guys know more about gardening than most people out there. There's people who know
less than you and I always think that people who know more should always teach people that
know less, whatever the skill is, but I'm particularly interested in teaching the gardening
skills to everybody. In my opinion, gardening should be taught in grade school. Everybody
in the world should be taught how to grow their own food so that they can become independent.
We're taught all these other things, but we are not taught how to grow our own food and
become independent. I want to encourage all you guys out there to find one or two people
that you can teach, whether it's your son, your daughter, your wife, your friend, or
someone off the street who is new into gardening, that wants to learn but don't know how. In
my opinion, gardening should not be intimidating. It might be intimidating for the police to
come knocking on your door but gardening should not be intimidating. The worst thing that
can happen is that if you buy some seeds and plant them and that they don't make it and
if you buy them at right place, you can even get a refund on the seeds! So there's no cost
to you and it's nothing ventured, nothing gained. The best thing that can happen if
you plant your own garden, plant your own seeds is that you'll be feeding yourselves
and your families, which is one of the most important things you can do. So whether you
guys need to put an ad on craigslist or in your local health food store or at your local
garden centre or nursery that says 'I'm willing to help teach someone to garden', I would
encourage everyone to do that. We need to spread this message about growing your own
food, becoming your own food, becoming independent, and rising above all the craziness happening
in the world today by growing your own food. I teach growing organically and non-GMO. I
don't advocate using any GMO plants or seeds in your garden. I always push for change,
and I think change happens from the ground up and not from the top down, like we've been
led to believe in our society today. So if you have any cool ideas about how to connect
with others in your area and teach them gardening, post them here because I'd love to see them,
and that would help others figure out how to help someone besides their direct family
and friends with gardening as well. So that's pretty much my message for today, you know,
I'm looking for some people from either Sonoma County or Las Vegas so please email me through
the YouTube service. If you go to my channel page there is a little place to click send
a message to me and I'll get that. So I hope you have enjoyed this episode. I've got to
feed my boogie brew to my little transplants and I've actually got a whole bunch other
transplants too. So once again, I'm John Kohler with growingyourgreens.com and remember, keep
on growing!
