[Narrator:] "Working Along the United States-Mexico Border:
Understanding the Situation" is the first in a series
for land management employees.
It presents experienced employees talking
about the problems that they, and the agencies they work for,
face from drug smuggling and illegal immigration.
It has three parts.
In Part One, "Nature of the Problem," you will hear
about the huge amount of drug smuggling
and illegal immigration that occurs along the border.
In Part Two, "Impacts on Land Management Agencies,"
employees talk about how this illegal activity threatens both
the natural resource and agency missions.
Finally, in Part Three, "Impacts on Employees,"
you'll hear how employees face such things
as unexpected encounters, being watched,
exposure to biological hazards, and the emotional toll.
This program is not intended to give you all the answers on how
to deal with issues along the border since they are numerous
and constantly changing.
In addition, each land management agency has a
different mission and policies.
This program is designed to raise your awareness
and stimulate discussion about the border situation.
Now, let's turn to Part One.
