The Art Ed program at IUP is I would say quite unique in that our students get a number of
different experiences both within the program and also related to the local community and
nationally as well. Students in Art Education take the two methods courses. It’s K-12
certifications, so they have a primary and secondary methods course, they take courses
in art criticism, they take courses in teaching art history. There’s a new teaching visual
culture course that is being developed. So in the classroom they get a lot of the theory
that they will be able to apply later in practice, so that they will probably be able to do a
pre-student teaching experience earlier as a sophomore and even have experience in observing
classrooms as a freshman. So they really can begin to get a sense of what teaching is like
early on, which I think will benefit them in the long run because just, they can see
the goal much earlier.
